5.2 - Location, Location, Location

Read a book set at least 50% in a location of a modern wonder: England; France; Canada; New York, USA; California,USA; Brazil; Paraguay; Panama; Netherlands
Required: If the setting is not evident on the book's main page include a reference or quote from the book when you post.

Alex | 488 comments Would The Night Circus work for this? It has a LOT of settings, but the dominant ones were New York, London, and Concord, Mass.

Just wanted to double check

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments what about The Hours by Michael Cunningham ? it actually takes place in New York, California, AND London. so it hits three of the locations. not sure if any of the set locations hits 50%, but since those three different locations all figure into the task....?? thanks for your help! :)

Massachusetts, which I also recall being a major setting, is not one of the specified locations.

So, 50% of the book would have to take place in New York and London - I don't recall 50% of it actually happening in those 2 spots, because there were so many locations and so much in MA, but it's been a couple years since I read it.

But, if you determine that at least 50% of the book takes places in those two locations, it works.

As long as all 3 combined add up to at least 50%, it works.

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 106 comments Sorry if this is a daft question, it's been a while since I've taken part, but does it have to be England exactly or will other parts of the UK count as well?

Only England.

Bridgett (brikie) | 5 comments I read This One Summer. The graphic novel is set entirely at Awago Beach, which is based on author's Canadian childhood vacation spot.

"Mariko Tamaki based the setting on the Canadian cottage community she went to growing up. And though the story takes place in the present day, a quality of remembrance infuses it." - New York Times article

While the novel doesn't explicitly say it's in Canada, there are small clues such as a character wearing a t-shirt that says "100% Canadian Beef."

Would this be acceptable?

There should be some reference that establishes the place.

Bridgett (brikie) | 5 comments Okay, since it's not explicitly stated, I'll use this one for another task. I actually did not realize until I was posting my task that Awago Beach is not the name of an actual location. I'm glad I took the time to double check on this.

Hi, I am sure this is written somewhere but... I am wondering if the books must be in English or if they can be in another language? Thank you, Valérie B

From the rules

Books in languages other than English may be used. Please provide information on the book and/or title to your English speaking moderators so they can understand how the books fit the tasks. Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use.

It looks like it is set in New York so the setting works. It has the genre childrens- it would need to meet SRC requirements.
