Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi everyone.

I was made a moderator of a fairly inactive group the Far Pavilions and Beyond: a Buddy Reading Group & I have been kicking around ideas about what to do with the group. I was thinking a buddy retro reading group for authors I love - some of who are already starting to fade into obscurity. The examples I gave Diane Lynn & Tadiana are Elizabeth Goudge. Frances Parkinson Keyes & Anya Seton, but I did a spot of research & a surprisingly large number of writers don't have an active group. I wouldn't be wanting to do authors that do have an active group so no Georgette Heyer, (;p) Mary Stewart, Norah Lofts or Agatha Christie. & of course we can still do M M Kaye's books - I have a copy of Death in Zanzibar.

Anyone who thinks they could be interested message me or Tadiana or leave a post in this thread.

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments I don't have many books from that period in my library but I did enjoy the novels of Elswyth Thane whose series of books followed one family from before the Revolutionary War into the 20th century. It starts with 'Dawn's Early Llight' and has seven novels in all. Thomas Costain also wrote some very popular novels.

Marissa Doyle | 147 comments I'm interested! Another author to consider would be Margaret Campbell Barnes.

message 4: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Maybe Angela Thirkell could be added to the mix? She published lots of books, and there’s only one group devoted in part to chat about her (along with Anthony Trollope). I’d put in for Sylvia Townsend Warner, as well.

Oh, yes to Angela Thirkell--I've been collecting her for years. I've only read Warner's Lolly Willowes and Kingdoms of Elfin but would like to know more about her.

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I am re-reading Angela Thirkell, Barbara Pym, Helen MacInnes, and several others...just finished a Madeline Brent this morning.

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments Thomas Costain was my favorite author when I was in high school, and I also liked Margaret Campbell Barnes very much. Her Brief Gaudy Hour, the first novel of hers I read, was also the first of many that I've read abut Anne Boleyn. I learned quite a bit from it about the charges brought against Anne!

Sana Souames | 2 comments I'm interested, especially about Elizabeth Goudge, I'm also willing to read all Daphne du Maurier books, but don't know if there is already an active group for her or not.

Three (count them three!) inactive groups for Daphne DuMaurier! So yes, she will be in the mix

The Far Pavilions & Beyond has bee rechristened Retro Reads

Might just do that, Carol. I remember a lot of these authors from when my Mum belonged to Foyles Book Club! I got to read them to (that's when I was introduced to GH), and recall I enjoyed them all.

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments This sounds right up my alley. I have been neglecting my real-life book groups, so I don't know that I will participate right away, but thank you for the information, Carol. If I think of any authors that haven't already been mentioned (or that aren't already covered by other groups) I will let you know.

Am I right that buddy reads are discussions among a subset of the Group?

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments Sheila, yes, buddy reads are basically the same as group reads, but it's up to the group members if they want to participate or not. Which is also true of group reads, I guess, but with group reads I think there's more of an expectation that most of the group will join in. That's not necessarily true for buddy reads--there's more picking and choosing the reads that are of interest to you. Even if only two or three are reading the same book at the same time, it's nice to have someone to discuss your questions and feelings with.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & it may be that some of the authors are so hard to get hold of, that we will offer more than one at a time.

We are still feeling our way a bit. :)

Sheila (in LA) (sheila_in_la) | 401 comments Thank you for clarifying the buddy read, Tadiana. I imagine I would be able to get most books through my public library system. I will watch this space for more info!

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments As I was reading and enjoying the second book in the series yesterday I would like to recommend the Sarah Kelling-Max Bittersohn series by Charlotte Macleod. Strictly speaking they are cozy mysteries but have a wonderful collection of characters from old Boston families and some charming romances.

message 16: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Oh, golly, I haven’t read Charlotte Macleod in ages. How could I have forgotten Max Bittersohn??

message 17: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments I got The Withdrawing Room from Amazon for $1.99 yesterday. I only have two others in paper back and hope Amazon offers the titles I don't have on the same terms.
I do like Max a lot-- so sane in contrast to Sarah's relatives!

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments Sounds intriguing, most of the authors listed are unknown to me!

Yes, one of my favorite series, great characters! I also love Macleod’s Professor Peter Shandy series. I love rereading the first, and IMHO the best in the series, Rest Ye Merry, every Christmas season.

I recently acquired a copy of The Luck Runs Out for my Kindle and have a paperback copy of The Corpse in Oozak's Pond. I was sure I had a copy of The Curse of the Giant Hogweed but can't find it where it should be. The curse of a creative memory!

message 23: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments I’ve reread both of those several times, but The Giant Hogweed was just a little too twee - only read it once.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & as much as I hate to brag, after a campaign of sustained nagging, the other group I co-moderate Retro Reads is a featured group on Goodreads.

See here

We are the bottom one, but we are a lot smaller than the other featured groups, so I'm really happy!

I just started reading Thirkell after running out of readily-available D.E. Stevenson. A number of both are available in paperback.

message 28: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I am re-reading Thirkell, just finished Pomfret Towers. She helped me through various vicissitudes of life, I really need her now.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ {{{Hugs Kim}}}

Just jump in & start a Thirkell thread if you want - or message me & I'll put one up (over at Retro Reads)

message 30: by Susan in NC (last edited Oct 26, 2017 07:19PM) (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4143 comments Thirkell and Trollope are two of my favorites, I’m working my way through chronologically, next one up for me is The Duke’s Daughter (Thirkell), and I’m listening to The Prime Minister audiobook on Scribd as I do my PT exercises every day. Eases the monotony!

Kim, I hope all is well, sending hugs and positive thoughts your way.

message 31: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso | 511 comments I do not know how to do a thread, but I would participate in discussions if anyone else wants to discuss Thirkell, and any others.

Kim Kaso | 511 comments Thanks, Carol (hugs back) and Susan.

Another author I think about in this way is Miss Read.

message 33: by Mir (new)

Mir | 35 comments Stevenson, Thirkell, and Read were all comfort reads for my mother, which is why I know of them.

I've only read a couple each of the latter two and would be glad to read more and discuss them, if someone wants to start a thread.

Hi Miriam!

I know a lot of members are keen on Angela Thirkell. The Retro Reads Group (which I also moderate) is over here. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

My little library has about eight Miss Read's, and, as I finished one last week, I wished that they had them all and I could read them in order. Just happiness and sparkles all winter!

And I hope you're getting more happies and sparkles today, Kim.
