Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass question

I am trying to identify two books. One is about a mom that has her husband leave her because she has a Down child. The protagonist is a child's author. She leaves a rose on her dresser for the child. The baby has to have heart surgery. The second book I am looking for is about a dog trainer that goes out to an island to help get around two Dobermans that she trained. She also has a lab. There is a shoot out in the basement.

Any help would be appreciated I know they were harlequin books. Thanks
