Well ladies, we have a three way tie for the group read... What should we do?

message 53: by Rosemarie (last edited May 26, 2017 05:26AM) (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
Could we have a tie-breaker poll of very short duration, say 2 or 3 days? If it looks like it would be a tie again, I would gladly change my vote to prevent that happening again, since I want to read both Conrad books and have already read Jurassic Park.

message 54: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Agree with Rosemarie.

message 55: by Jenny, Makeing a world of books (new)

That should work Rose. I guess all our nominations were popular this month!

Wend (wends) | 99 comments HI Mods,

As I've missed the last couple of months nominations and polls thought I'd check when the next nomination category will be available?

message 59: by Jenny, Makeing a world of books (new)

Wend, I'll have it up tomorrow and the focus will be State Of The Nation!

I will be on vacation from the 17 to the 29, with limited access to the web, so I am curious to see which book we will read. There are a lot of good books to choose from.
I know all about moving, Jenny. Hopefully you know where everything is. One of my friends broke her leg a couple of days after she moved into her new house. Fortunately she is a Girl Guide leader(like your Girl Scouts) and her troop were a great help. That was in the winter, and she back to her old self again, thank goodness. She is also our amazing cat sitter.

Jenny Clark | 989 comments Mod
Rose, I know where all my books are LOL and that's about all that matters! We are still between houses right now. I hope to be done in two weeks or so, more like need to be.
I hope you enjoy your vacation!

Just to make it clear - if you scroll down the main page if the group you'll find the nomination folder just above the reading rooms :-)

Here is a direct link to the July thread:

message 73: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Hello ladies, just a heads up - I'll be travelling a lot these next two months so won't be able to set the polls, etc. Sorry!

message 74: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
Thanks for the info. Enjoy your travels.
When is the best time to set up the poll?

message 75: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Thank you :-)

Usually I open the nomination around the 10th or so to give people a few days, then the poll around the 15th or so, give or take a couple of days.

One of our members raised a valid point. If we made the discussion thread for our books easier to find, more people might participate in the discussion. Is there a way we can do this and still keep the categories intact?

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) I always get the a notice on the little bell up in the right-hand corner that someone has commented on a topic I'm following. I went to my settings and made sure all the groups I want to get notices from have the box checked--I don't want emails, but I like seeing the notices up by the bell.

So I don't have to look for the discussions--they come to me, I guess :)

message 78: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
That's good to hear, Bryan.

message 79: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Maybe we could have a monthly read folder to move the thread of thr month to and then move it back to the category folder when the month is up?

message 80: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
That sounds like a good idea, Camille.
I can set that up and also the nomination thread.

message 81: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
I set up a second thread for Little Dorrit to break the discussion into two parts, after a suggestion from one of our members. I hope it will improve the discussion of this very long book.

I will be going on holiday in October, so I am giving plenty of notice that some one else will need to set up the nominating thread and polls that month.
I can do August and September.

message 83: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
Our group discussions have been fading away. I set up the poll for September but after that I won't be able to any more.
Someone else can take over the nominations, etc. or else just let the members keep track of their books in the reading rooms or post under the individual books.

message 84: by Renee (new)

Renee M | 434 comments Mod
Thanks for the notice, Rosemarie. I know how frustrating that is. :(

message 85: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
Yes, we both have lead discussions with very few participants. Generally not even those who voted for the book.

I will make an announcement when I list our last group read that after that we will take a hiatus for a while.

I am thinking about starting a challenge thread just to keep the group active. What do you think?

This is sad. A challenge thread might create some interest, though as it’s a small group there may not be much participation. I wonder if you would consider voting in the same way, but having the top 2 choices for the month? Some people might read both, but it would allow flexibility - a single book is sometimes difficult or expensive to obtain. Though I’ve just looked at the recent polls & am shocked at how few people voted. Even if we read all the books suggested it would generate less discussion than other groups have for buddy reads. I think this group gets overlooked by comparison with the larger & more active Classics group.

In 2017 there was a challenge to choose how many of the 1000 books to read. It still shows on my page. But we didn’t have the challenge this year. I set up a bookshelf for this year’s books, but it was more fun seeing the challenge - perhaps we could do this again some time?

message 87: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
I find that there are too few active members, as you remarked Trisha.
I think that instead of a specific book, I will open a thread for the topic of the month and members can share the books they are reading there.

I am in another group that was very active for a year or more but has now faded away. There are just so many other groups out there.

Thanks for your interest, Trisha.
I am a moderator in two other groups and just don't have time to focus on a third.

A topic of the month might work well. The topic lists are always available, though sometimes it’s difficult to choose. Perhaps members could recommend those they have read & enjoyed, as well as saying what they aim to read next.

message 89: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
That is exactly what I was thinking, Trisha. I enjoy personal recommendations for books, and warnings too.

You're welcome. The genre challenge works well in th 2018 challenge group, so we will see how the theme read by category works here.

message 92: by Jenny, Makeing a world of books (new)

Jenny Clark | 989 comments Mod
Thanks everyone for your work in this group! I have just been so busy with everything that has been going on! I think the monthly theme would work pretty well, but we'll see in October!

message 93: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
I hope it works out too, Jenny. Participation has been fading in the regular group reads.
What do you think of buddy reads for this group?

message 94: by Jenny, Makeing a world of books (new)

Jenny Clark | 989 comments Mod
Buddy reads might not be a bad idea, that way people could read what they have or can easily get and know there is someone to discuss it with!

message 95: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1078 comments Mod
That's what I thought too, Jenny.
