Good luck - as GL says, some heavyweight stuff there!!If 'The Dark' on your first list is the James Herbert one, I've read two of them.
First list - Like I said before, Imperfect Strangers is great, although extremely creepy.I started reading Ash (if it's the James Herbert one) the other day and gave up - possibly 'cos it said it would take me 8 hours to read.
Second list.
I enjoyed You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!
and binned Nicholas Nickleby
I gave "William Walker's First Year of Marriage" 3 stars
I did get through my 2011 books and have just half a dozen or so of 2012 to read or bin.

I enjoyed Ash - have you read the first book?
I remember reading The Coral Island as a kid and even in those unreconstructed days it struck me as pretty racist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coral_Island though of course it was written in 1858.

The Dark is James Herbert and I haven't read the first bok, I though Ash was a stand alone. A lot of them are heavy going ones as they are generally the free ones! I used to love "classics" though but I find I have far less time for them these days so don't enjoy them as much, shorter and straight to the point books suit me better.
Thanks for the opinions, I shall start with those ones (the recommended ones, at least)

Ash is a sequel but not sure how important it is to have read the first one
I think I may have downloaded one or two from your list - and decided not to read them after all.One that I did read I ended up deleting from my Goodreads record because the author kept messing about with the book record and deleting the books.
Read two books, turns out one of them wasn't on the list. Oh well, at least I enjoyed it.The last Kingdom was good though, I'll have to watch the TV series next

As long as you are reading and enjoying
I've started Ash, it is the 3rd in the series but is standalone as well. It's an investigative series so each one focusses on a different investigation. I'm not sure how I'll get on with it
I'm not really enjoying it, it seems to be a bit ridiculous at times and there is too much going on. think I'm going to give up and read something else.

I finally read Imperfect Strangers (bought it 3 years ago) and that is now me up to date with all the paid for books since 2014. I have £5 worth of unread books in bought in 2013 and £1.91 in 2012 still to go, at some point.Might try a few old freebies next to clear them out, but first, sleep.
