Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Hi folks. I had some news which has been a long time in the works, but I've been hesitant to share it for fear of jinxing myself. But if I can't share it with my fellow writers, who can I share it with?

So back in October, I was contacted by a SF press in the UK. They had heard me talking about the book I am currently working on in a FB writer's group (as I often do) and expressed interest in me joining them. Months of back and forth with manuscripts and editing suggestions followed.

A few weeks ago, on my birthday no less, I had my first Skype call with the publisher himself. We talked ideas, edits, direction, and suggestions. And by the time we were done, he let me know that they wanted to sign me for a three book deal and a short story. It was the best present I could have gotten!

Naturally, this will mean they next year or more will be pretty busy for me. However, I promise to still make time for this group, its people, and our various projects! Best of luck to everyone in their endeavors!

Thanks! I do hope I can parlay this into helping others get their books considered. It took many years to get this far, more than I care to admit ;)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) There's more to this story, but I held it back since it kind of disrupts from the happy news. About a week ago, the acquiring editor of this publisher's SF press (let's call him P) announced that he quit over difference of opinion (you know, "had different visions about creative direction" and all that!).

Since I hadn't signed a contract just yet, but got an expressed oral commitment, I had to check with whoever was taking over to see what was what. Luckily, the acquiring editor for the company at large (let's call him Q) said he knew who I was and had already seen my manuscript and liked it. Now I'm waiting on Q's opinions for the updated manuscript - the one that had the edits that P suggested to me.

At the same time, P and I talked, and he said that he would still like to sign me for a deal once he gets his own publisher established. I also semi-talked him into taking a look at some zombie fiction I wrote years ago. However, that will take a few months, he said. In the meantime, just waiting on Q to say we're still a go so I can sign a contract and make sure they are stuck with me! :)

Complications, yes. But I am hopeful this won't deter from things.

Groovy Lee Congratulations, Matthew. I hope it all goes well once the knots are untangled. Nothing goes smoothly, does it?

message 9: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Nope! In any case, I do have one bit of advice since it is what led to this. You want to find writer's groups on Facebook that cater to your particular genre. Publishers like to join these and hear what aspiring authors are working on, as a way of scoping out new talent.

I'm sure it goes without saying, but be sure to talk about whatever it is you are working on (or have finished) as much as you can! Talk about your process, your characters, and be sure to mention any professional qualifications or personal experiences that helped you write the book. You know, make it sound authentic.

Apparently, it works! :)

Groovy Lee Good advice, thanks.

Having two options is usually better than 0 or 1. Hope you'll have both options viable once P is set up and you'll make the right choice -:)

message 13: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Why thank you, Nick. I also thought so, and figured it might even be good to play them off against each other a little! No, that would devilish. But it can be good to publish different works with different publishers. See which one is capable of having a better reach or services.

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) So there's been some updates. I managed to finish the manuscript to my book about a week and a half ago. I then sent it to the publisher who just notified me today that they are done reading it, and want to proceed! As we discussed, the deal we are about to sign will include a sequel, and a possible short story as a primer.

The contracts come tomorrow and I will be officially signing on with Castrum Press!

Why, thank YOU. Of course, I have told them I got plans for a third book, but that will have to wait on how good book I and II do, right? :)

Ganbatte!

message 20: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Alex, I take it from the context you mean, "do your best"? In that case, I certainly shall and thanks for the well-wishes!

Also, this puts me in mind of a topic for a new thread, which would have to do with priming the market and following up on publications. Say, for example, do you try to produce lots of short stories before releasing a big one, and how do you follow up on something big - a sequel, or a series of shorter works?

message 21: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Well done, Matt, congrats!

Hope you'll see nice figures when you receive the draft contract -:)

Correct. I like it better than saying "good luck" b/c one of its implications is that to a larger degree you don't have control. Whereas saying "Ganbatte" implies that to a larger extent you do have control over your outcome and by working hard and smart you can accomplish your goals.

yes, that would be a cool thread.

Waking up this morning, inspired by your announcement, I thought of starting another thread, which would be just an announcement about resources for contract negotiations.

That DOES sound good. People need to know what they are up against and where they can get some guidance.

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Okay, more updates from the past week. So the contracts were signed on Monday, and I have been given a tentative publication date of mid-September. And we discussed cover art, and we decided that it would feature the prime locations in the story - namely, Mercury, Mars, Callisto and Titan.

Here's the image I was using as a kind of concept art, which I said I thought the cover should be be based on:

Congrats and good luck! Mid-September should be good season for publication.
All seems set for cosmic pool/billiard -:)
