So what were everyone's thoughts on this book?

I personally loved it! What about you?

I really enjoyed it but did find some faults with it. Some literal faults as I found grammatical mistakes and typos, and I would have liked some more world building; I found myself left with a few questions on how the world worked once I finished it.

That being said I also think it was an awesome story and I could never tell where it was going. The last 50 or so pages were phenomenal.

I agree. I would have loved more world building as that felt slightly short and I wanted to know more. But the fact that I could never tell where the story was going was my favorite. It made all of the twists more interesting because they continued to change what I thought would happen. What did you think of the relationship?

Exactly! I can usually tell where a story is going but with this one I didn't even have the faintest clue. Seriously, all of my guesses were incorrect.

I have mixed opinions on the relationship. I both think that the actual romance part of the relationship could have been fleshed out a little more, but it was also refreshing that it was the friendship over the romance that was important and carried the story. If that makes sense...

Yeah that definitely makes sense! And I agree. I enjoyed that the relationship felt more friendship based as opposed to the romance. I actually wish they just had not included the romance at all and saved it for the second book, but it is a YA and that's usually a common theme in them.

Yes! The author could have left it at just hinting at it and that would have been perfect. I'm a huge lover of romance but you gotta either make it so the first kiss gives you all the feels or give us a break from unneeded romance.

What did you think of the characters?

Grace (gracethomsen) | 34 comments Mod
Darcy wrote: "What did you think of the characters?"

I really liked them! I felt like they the "adult" scythe's acted like parents (mostly) which kept it from feeling like that classic YA story of kids doing whatever unsupervised. But I think that Citra was definitely my favorite because she felt the most relatable. What about you?

Oh yeah! I hadn't realised that but now you mention it...

I don't know! I liked them both for different reasons. If we're going by the first half of the book then it would have been Rowan but then they both changed and I can't choose!

Yeah it's hard to pick favorites! I just really liked Citra and I feel like she was more developed by the end than Rowan was, but I'm hoping with book 2 he gets more development.

I think Rowan developed a lot it just wasn't necessarily in the right way, and now in the second book he's going to have to unlearn it or (and from the ending this is what sounds like might happen) learn to use that change and development to suit him.

Yeah that's true. I think that most of his development with the next book will be all about him realizing what he really wants and believes instead of what others have told him to want or believe. But I'm really excited for the next book, I just wish it was out already.

I hope that's what it is but I also kinda hope her keeps going the way Citra says he does at the very, very end.

That's something, what do you think about that ending? I loved those last 50 or so pages but it almost feels as though the author could just drop the book there and not continue on. Although I really want him to.

Yes I loved those last couple of chapters! I feel like he created a great way to end the book, with enough of a closing that if he never continued it would be okay but that if he did it would make you really excited for the next one. I'm really glad though that he's making it a series (a trilogy?). Although originally I thought it was going to be more of each book focusing on a trial of becoming a scythe and not ending it with her already becoming one.

I have no idea how many books are going to be in it, I honestly haven't been looking into it. I was expecting it to end with one of them being picked but I had no idea who the whole time. Again, I just had no idea where the plot was going the whole time. Which was awesome as that hardly ever happens.

That was probably my favorite part, not being able to tell where the plot was going. I had a couple of ideas but the only one I was right about was Scythe Faraday not actually being dead. Other than that I had no clue about anything else.

Yeah I totally fell for that one. Not being able to tell where it was going was also my favourite thing about it.

What was your least favourite thing?

I think it probably was the romance. I just really felt like it was unnecessary to have in the first book.

What was your least favorite thing?

Definitely the world building or lack of it. If it wasn't for that then my rating would have been higher. I was just left with so many questions like how do they access the Thunderhead? How does the body know when a scythe has killed it or is it just not taken back to a revival bay? If so, what happens if someone doesn't realise that that person was killed by a scythe and does take them to a revival bay? What happens if the last person for a scythes quota resists? Does that scythe glean the rest of the family or does some other scythe have to glean them? What sort of technology do they have? For a world where humanity is supposedly at the highest it will ever go, it seems remarkable like nowadays.

Yeah that totally makes sense. He really didn't flesh out all of that or give us a clear answer on how it all works. Hopefully with the next books he can give us more backstory on the Thunderhead.

Yeah hopefully, but for me it will be a little too late. It really should have been in the first book

Same. I'm debating whether to try and get a hardcover to match my copy or save money...

Ooo that's a hard one. I try to make my copies match but I definitely have tons of series that are all miss matched between paperbacks and hardcovers.

It'll definitely have been a little late to introduce it but maybe he has some other plot twists to work in and that's why he left us in the dark on most of that.
