Me too! What an exciting image to wake up to. According to Amazon, my books outsold 8 million others. Wow- I can't believe it.

So, how do I word that on my bio? It's only one book- Do I put Number one best-selling author on Amazon? Do I just put it after that book?

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments Brilliant. Well done. Amazon number 1 best selling author. Is that how they say it?

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments Oh well, still miles ahead of anything I’ve written. Haven’t sold a book in weeks. (As usual.)

Carole. Omg. Do you think you will be able to add "NYT Bestselling Author" to your name or is Amazon still not sharing numbers with NYT?

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
I checked. It's not on there. I think you have to sell a crazy amount of books to get on there in a very limited amount of time.

Loved the article. Your success has brought a light in my life too. This coronavirus pandemic has just been horrible. In addition to commercial agreements, I am also the go-to counsel for labour law matters, so I am the go to counsel regarding lay offs, dismissal and all the horrible shit most companies are currently dealing with.

I wrote a memorandum on how we kan "minimize labour costs as an effect of covid-19 outbreak" that my manager told me to "humanize" today. I almost told him, there's no way I can make this any way easier for us. I can use ten paragraphs to make it softer but the end conclusion is that people will be losing their jobs.

Wait, this is a good news thread, I'm sorry.
CAROLE, congratulations.

It's been devastating, but the one thing I've noticed is that most people understand. I had to lay off people who had been with me for over twenty years. It was painful, and there was no pleasant way to do it. But right now, we all have to stay safe first. Everything will sort itself out when it's done.
As far as humanizing your memo- that's silly. Wrapping it in pretty language doesn't lessen the pain. Sometimes the unvarnished truth is more appreciated. Of the 400 or so people we laid off, only one carried on in an unprofessional manner. He was one of the last to go- we held on as long as we could and I personally called him to let him know as soon as this is over, he would be back.
What people don't understand, is that we are not melting down financially because of not doing our job or lack of service. It's the circumstances of this disaster. When it ends, and I know it will, things will get better for everyone.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1236 comments Great interview! A coup! Crossing the pond is no easy task.

A thought occurred to me: this time 3 months ago my country (UK) was totally divided between those who wanted to Leave the EU and those who did not. Demonstrations, anger at the 'other side' and so on. Very bad. Now three months later, we seem to have forgotten the Brexit thing altogether and we are all pulling together - completely united except for a very, very few.

What a great turnaround and with less energy expended on politics, we can use this lockdown time to read and write! Something good...

Congratulations, Carole. Wonderful news.
Someone asked me for help publishing a children's book, but that is an expertise I know nothing about. You are the first person I thought of to consult. What advice would you have for a novice wanting to pursue publishing his work?

message 3972: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman | 4665 comments Mod
I always tell them to get on a Goodreads thread and ask as many questions from other authors as they can. I tell them to expect the work to continue after they hit publish. If they don't intend to promote, they will probably not sell many books. If you want you can send him my email and I'm happy to talk to him.

Thanks so much, Carole. I will pass it along.
