Donald and Lillian Stokes have written a series of nature guides that describe a subject area. Not really a field guide to ID a specific specimen, this series describes the subject in fairly readable manner. I've read Nature in Winter, and Insect Lives from cover to cover and the majority of Amphibians and Reptiles, and Animal Tracking and Behavior. I guess I'm a nerd.
There's a lot of interesting information for trail guides and naturalists and although there are just little sections on each subject, the information is readable like a summary of the animal or plant's characteristics with lots of neat little facts.
The books are illustrated with B&W line drawings. They have been out a good while so may no longer be in print but I'd be happy to lend mine out.
