Luke Ahearn | 9 comments I have a new post on my blog about character names. It's a short one this time.

Roland Nuñez | 55 comments Good post. Every now and then, I'll try to find a unique name that fits a character if I'm trying to go for a certain image of that person.

But generally, I don't stress too much about the name. Honestly, if a writer tries too hard by having something that will stand out, it'll show. Better to just have a normal-sounding name for that particular region/time period and let the character grow into it.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 460 comments I always find names either come simple or are really thought of to be unique. If name isn't important, you pick a simple one but if you want the character to stand out, you go all out and create a unique one.

Jim Vuksic The names assigned to the characters in my one and only novel were selected from a hand-written list of those familiar to me.

The name of each of the twenty-one characters that play an essential role in the story, to one extent or another, was evaluated and assigned according to my opinion that it best suited the character's personality and temperament.

Names for non-essential characters (extras, if you prefer that term) were randomly chosen and assigned; gender being the sole consideration.
