Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments We will be reading The Ashfall Series by Mike Mullin for the Group Series read, beginning with book 1 June 2014. Please read this book and participate in the group discussion.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) I SO love this entire series, enjoy everyone!! And Mike Mullin is an incredibly nice, down-to-earth guy too.

I've already read the first two books and love them both! Excited for this series read!

Kelly Hull (kellyvan) | 81 comments I started this one a while back. Maybe it's time to pick it back up :)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) Oh gosh, Kelly, you definitely need to. This series as a whole is awesome. And the amount of detail and research that Mike Mullin put into it deserves our attention. I've talked to him a little about it, and he works SO HARD at making this series real and three-dimensional.

Oh awesome! I think you'll love the final book, it is epic and there are some SHOCKING moments, one in particular where your jaw will drop and you'll be like "He did NOT just do that."

Kelly Hull (kellyvan) | 81 comments Ok, now you've done it David. "He did NOT just do that." is something I find irresistible :) I got the other two delirium books from amazon yesterday, so I'm a bit torn.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) I loved all three Delirium books, especially the ending, which everyone hated LOL. But seriously, just wait for the third book of Ashfall, you'll be shocked. Like jaw on the floor shocked.

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments I didn't love Delirium, but it was worth reading. Pandemonium I thought was better than Delirium, but I still need to read Requiem and Hana.

I have so many books to read, most that I'm dying to read, but the third book in the Ashfall Series may need to be next. I agree with David, Mike Mullin really researched the heck out of this series. Besides being entertained, I learned a ton. I'm eating kale like crazy now...I'm just sayin'!

LOL! I'm eating kale too! I read you shouldn't have it everyday though. I guess like everything, in moderation. But I put it in my smoothie every other day :) YUM!

There was something in Requiem that reminded me of Red River...the abandoned house. I'm not sure why, but I kind of envisioned the same scene while reading both books even though the circumstances are totally different.

Kelly when are you going to start writing again? I know you just had a baby and all, but inquiring minds want to know.

Jane (janeinri) | 129 comments Oh, I LOVED this whole series - waited anxiously for each new one to be released. LOVED the ending - but was sad to leave these characters. I am going to re-read Ashfall this month, even though I have a ton of un-read "to-be-reads". I look forward to the group discussions!

Kale in smoothies is the way to go!

Jane you've been a real advocate for this series! I'm right there with you!

I read your reviews for Ashfall and Ashen Winter. I'm so glad you liked them! I haven't read Sunrise yet, but I will read your review when I'm done.

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments For those of you who have read just one book or all of them, let's hear you weigh in. What did you like about this series?

David Estes (davidestesbooks) I really loved Darla as a main character. She's so well-developed and it's so cool how good of a mechanic she is. She ALWAYS manages to think outside of the box and come up with a solution, love that about her! Did anyone read the novella Darla's Story (Ashfall, #0.5) by Mike Mullin ? I really enjoyed that one too and (view spoiler)

Oh, David, I'm glad you reminded me of that novella. I downloaded it and then forgot about it! I like Darla, too - but I also love Alex. I love that this is a series that teen guys can read and relate to. It was so hard to find books my son would read when he was that age - it was mostly female leads, and he couldn't relate. And Alex starts as such a typical American teenager - I loved the growth he showed through the 3 books.

I have been re-reading Ashfall and it's just as good the second time around! Cheer, can't wait until you read the third one - love to hear your reaction.

Well, as I stated above, I did love the main characters and the growth they showed throughout the series. I also loved the realistic feel - this is set in OUR world of today, and having visited Yellowstone I can imagine a giant eruption easily. There are moments of "He did NOT just do that to these kids!" that left my heart pounding or my eyes tearing. And I love the ending - a very satisfying ending to characters and a world I was sad to leave.

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments For those of you who have read Ashfall, I have a question for you. Towards the beginning of Ashfall, Alex hides in his neighbor's bathtub and describes the experience as "terrified boredom." What? I'm not sure if I've ever been terrified and bored, more like anxious! What do you think? Can you relate? What does "terrified boredom" mean?

David Estes (davidestesbooks) LOL! I sort of know what he means, although I'm struggling to think of a time where I experienced that (thankfully). But the closest I can get is when I was at a Scout's campout and we were playing a game in the woods, in pitch darkness. I was hiding for SO LONG, but I felt pretty scared the whole time. Every sound freaked me. I kept waiting for something to grab me. Yet at the same time, I was bored out of my mind. I almost WANTED something to happen, even though I was scared of what it might be. So in an ironical way, I think it makes sense :)

Yeah, I agree, that's exactly why I think it stands out. It has great role models for both genders, and I think it would appeal to boys, girls, women, and men. That's the sign of a really good book!

Though I have never experienced "terrified boredom" myself, I understand what Alex is describing. I could see myself, in a similar situation, feeling that. I think it is an excellent way to describe how it would feel to be in that type of situation.

I, too, have never experienced "terrified boredom" personally, but I get it. Here's a typical teenager, probably always plugged in, to games or music or social media...and now he's stuck in a bathtub, unable to see, unable to hear or talk...but scared witless by the constant booming. Hopefully I'll never experience it myself!

Nicely put Jane!

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments I choose not to live my life in fear, but I do believe in being prepared, especially for natural disasters. We aren't exactly hoarders or preppers, but we do have a years worth of food and supplies. Ashen Winter seriously scared me and maybe it's because I live right next to the beautiful Three Sisters Mountains and yes, they are dormant volcanoes. The Pacific NW is littered with volcanoes. So how about the rest of you? Have you prepared for a natural disaster or are you hoping a Katrina won't happen near you?

No, I'm not TOTALLY prepared, but we have camping supplies (and always a tank of stove fuel) and about a metric f-ton of batteries - I HATE to run out of batteries. I have a lot of canned good (not enough dry goods)and I have seeds. I ran a Girl Scout camp without running water or electricity so I know a few tricks. My secret weapon? My eldest went through the Ranger program at GS camp - basically a 2 week survival training. I've always said if I'm ever in a "Lost" type crash she has to be with me! LOL We don't worry about volcanos here, but often lose power for days from hurricanes or winter storms. Smart to be prepared.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) I am completely and utterly unprepared, sadly. Although if some of the PA books are correct about how bad things might get, I might be the lucky one to just get wiped out at the beginning!

Oh - and I should mention I live in the house of wax! I am trying to stop selling PartyLite candles, but in the years I've been a consultant I have purchased enough to last ALL of us here through the apocalypse. I sell Avon, and the last few years Avon has gotten into candles - and I have a lot of those. Lip balms to outfit us for 100 lifetimes!! I thought of the lip balms while reading, I think it was in Ashen Winter, where they are wearing lipstick to emolliate their lips from the cold winds. So just make it to the middle of RI David, and I'll set you right up LOL!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) LOL!!! Getting from Hawaii to RI might be a challenge haha! But thank you for the offer, I'll do my best :)

message 33: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane (janeinri) | 129 comments Oh, Hawaii...hmm, I think I'll steal a large boat and load it with all the supplies, go down the East Coast, through the Panama Canal, and cross the Pacific to YOU. Sound about right? LOL

LOL!!! I DEFINITELY want YOU on my team :) You'll be welcomed with open arms assuming Hawaii hasn't sunk into the ocean by that point :)

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments No, we can't lose Hawaii!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) LOL! I certainly hope not but I am a little scared of tsunamis living here!

Cheer Papworth (cheerest) | 390 comments I grew up on the Oregon Coast and we has Tsunami warnings often. Now I live in Central Oregon nestled among a chain of dormant volcanoes. People ask me all the time if it scares me, but my motto is to be prepared without living my life in fear.
