Book Description: For most of the fifteen years that she has lived at the Wildwind Mental Health Facility, twenty-five-year old Kaila has existed on the periphery of life, never forming attachments or caring for much other than her laptop computer, a blog that she writes about the meaning of life, and her only friend a fellow patient named Pauline. For Kaila nothing matters more than the routines of the facility and how it allows her to predict events that will happen based on probabilities and the past. Her obsession with predictions propels her to search for meaning in everything that surrounds her. But when the bubble of safety that has always protected Kaila is shattered with Pauline's discharge from Wildwind, Kaila must cope with the reality of the impermanence of her life.
With her careful and routine world rapidly slipping away from her, Kaila clings to the only thing she has left, her computer and the imagined life she might have in the world outside Wildwind, what she calls "The Real". And just when Kaila thinks her life is over a new chapter begins when Derrick, a new patient to the facility, pushes his way into her life. Derrick's unpredictable behavior both baffles and also intrigues Kaila. Before she knows what is happening she falls under his spell, believing that he has the precognitive abilities that he claims to have. Through Derrick, Kaila sees an opportunity to find real magic in the world. But with her quest comes sacrifices and letting go of the one thing that has been her reality for as long as she can remember, her life in Wildwind.
