Hating Sunshine
I’m probably the only person in California who hates sunshine.
Sunshine sucks the life out of me. It pulls the water out of my body, burns my skin and leaves me with little brown spots. My “cute” freckles are a result of the
sun. Sunshine makes me lazy and bores me, makes me want to stay inside and
sleep.
Rain is the opposite of sunshine.
I long for the rain, the rain that pours down and refreshes the world, that rids the smog and fills the air with a clean, crisp smell.
I long for the clouds that blanket the sky and cover the horrid sun, the clouds that lie as a protective layer over the world.
But I’m stuck with the sun.
*******
I roll over and groan, groan as the sunshine pokes my eyes. It’s 6:15, far too
early to get up, but the sun is up, and my east -facing window lets it shine straight into my retinas.
Why do I have to live in Southern California? Why can’t I live in Seattle,
anywhere in Washington, where the rain is ever present and wonderful?
Rain is such a nice change.
*******
Later, when I’m watching the news, I see a video clip of a flood. It’s in Washington.
The thick, murky water streams through the streets, ten feet deep, covering doors and windows, trapping people inside their homes.
I shudder as I watch, as I see dogs paddling at the surface and people in rafts trying to navigate through the streets.
A child’s stuffed animal bobs up and down in the torrent of rain.
I look out the window for the relentless sun. For once, I’m glad to see it.
Sunshine is safe. Not my favorite weather, but safe.
I’ll never ask for rain again, not while I remember the horror of a world of water.
