Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Tsar Wars: Agents of Isis by Stephen Goldin is MOD PICK because it's what's up next in your Borg Queens very lengthy To-Be-Read (TBR) list. MOD PICKS will always be books which caught my eye, but the luck of the Random.org randomizer cheated me out of a good kick-in-the-pants excuse to read it.

[*hey ... assimilation has its privileges 3:-) *]

This month's MOD PICK is by one of our Space Opera Fans founding community members, author Stephen Goldin. He has offered it for free for all e-reader formats via a Smashwords coupon. I invite you to come and read it with me?

"With humanity scattered across the galaxy on hundreds of worlds, the Empire is the only force for order across the stars. Without it, interstellar conflicts would bring chaos and billions of deaths.

But the tsar has been in a coma for five years now, and his grand-niece, the only apparent heir, is only 14 years old. In this hour of crisis, the task of preserving the Empire falls to two untrained--but far from unskilled--agents of the Imperial Special Investigation Service. Can they make a difference against the vast forces arrayed against them?"

Why not discuss the book or post links to your reviews in the thread below. Remember, if you post spoilers, be kind and use the html (view spoiler) code outlined in the 'some html is OK' just above the comment boxes.

I'll give a Smashwords coupon for a free copy of Treacherous Moon: Agents of ISIS, Book 2 to the first person who, in this thread, identifies the author of the quote at the beginning of Natalia's speech.

And thank you, Anna, for using your truly godlike powers to bless my book. (One might almost think you're Polly or someone.) I hope everyone enjoys it.

And I'll be more than happy to do an author interview, if you'd like.

You're welcome, Stephen :-) We've got some core space opera fans members who also happen to be authors who greet newcomers, visit the community often, talk about fannish stuff with other SOF members, and in general are too polite to shriek 'buy my book, buy my book, buy my book.' I want to make sure our core membership doesn't get shoved aside.

Besides ... I'm just about finished re-reading Eternity Brigade and was looking for an excuse to continue onward with Tsar Wars. :-)

Stephen Goldin (stephengoldin) | 114 comments BTW: If you're having trouble with the Runglish words, there's a glossary at the back of the book.

If you're having trouble with the Yiddish words, shame on you! Everyone should know some basic Yiddish expressions. It's part of living! Don't be a schlemiel.

Shannon Haddock I'm about a quarter of the way into this book and loving it so far, especially the characters. I have this horrible feeling Judah is going to painfully learn the difference in fiction and reality soon.

Stephen Goldin (stephengoldin) | 114 comments I don't dare say anything, but I, too, am very fond of the characters. They keep the book from being straight mindless adventure.

And the author of the quote is Mark Twain, is it not?

Correctimundo, Shannon, and thanks for the great review! You win the Smashwords coupon for Treacherous Moon: Agents of ISIS, Book 2. I would be PMing it to you right now, but unfortunately my computer blew up last week, and everything's a mess here at the moment. I'll get it to you as soon as possible, promise.

Sorry about the wonky formatting; I'll look into it as soon as my computer's back in working order and I catch up on the work I've missed in the past week. (Finishing up a new book!)

As for the Yiddish words, this is the online dictionary I use: http://www.yiddishdictionaryonline.com/. Maybe I'll have to include a link in the book. BTW, the characters don't use Yiddish because they're Jewish; they do it because they're in show biz. Yiddish is the universal language of show business, you know.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Okay ... this book finally moved up into the top of my TBR list and so far I am loving it :-) Such unusual characters!

You're welcome.

It's okay. Take your time. I overindulged at the used bookstore a few weeks ago so it might be awhile before I got to it anyway.

Thank you for the link to the Yiddish dictionary.

Hah!

NOBODY in this group has ever had that happen. Nope. Never. Certainly not me...

A fun and entertaining read.

Stephen Goldin (stephengoldin) | 114 comments As per Shannon's review, above, as best I can determine, the problem with the TOC was caused by a weirdness in MS Word, a tendency to insert hidden bookmarks in the text without telling you. I've gone back and reformatted all the Agents of ISIS books to eliminate the problem. If anyone downloaded any of the books in the series before July 1, go back to the place where you bought it and download the latest copy. With any luck, this'll correct the problem.

And if people want cheap copies of the remaining books in the series, this is a great month to get them. See my notice here.
