David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Done. There seems to be a librarian insisting not to include the appendices against policy.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments You might want to open a new thread for each request.

I'm a bit hesitant on The Kite Runner since four different librarians already set different page numbers for this edition, from 336 to 324 to 344 and then back to 324. None of them used 340. 336 is the number on Amazon and on all the other book sellers I could find.
Can you please try to list what each of those numbers may include?

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments I updated A Game of Thrones, The Kite Runner and A Clash of Kings because there were previous edits with those numbers, suggesting someone removed pages they should have included.

You did not provide an ISBN for "A Thousand Splendid Suns - 424 pages" so I can't tell which edition you have.

Before I continue, I want to be certain of something. You write "I got this ISBN number from Goodreads" which worries me a little. Is the ISBN from goodreads or from the cover of the book in front of you?

A second thing I want to be certain about, in these numbers you should not include advertisements, so I want to make sure you didn't.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Also, you did not provide ISBN for The Sicilian and The Autobiography of Malcolm X

message 5: by David (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments For Silverthorn, the ISBN you listed is an ebook. I'm going to stop updating until you clarify.

message 6: by David (last edited Feb 05, 2017 03:41AM) (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Same front covers is not enough. You need to have the exact same ISBN on the book (inside or on the back cover), or it may be a different edition with a similar cover.

David already updated the edition with this ISBN, see comments #3 and #29.

message 8: by Bea (new)

Bea Please note that GR uses Worldcat for confirmation of page count. Amazon page count is used primarily for Kindle books which are not on Worldcat.

Bea Hasham wrote: "A Game of Thrones ISBN 978-0-00-744803-6"

For this ISBN, Worldcat does not give a page count. I went directly to the publisher and found that, for this ISBN, the page count is given as 864.

message 10: by Bea (new)

Bea Hasham wrote: "A Thousand Splendid Suns
ISBN13: 9780747585893"

Worldcat states that the correct page count is 419. This matches the GR entry.

message 11: by Bea (new)

Bea Maybe this information will help:

From the librarian manual: The number of pages in a book is meant to include all content except for advertisements and preview chapters for other books. Included end material may include acknowledgments, afterwords, appendices, bibliographies, glossaries, indexes, notes, and suggested discussion questions.

Introductory material paged using roman numerals is not included in the total page count.

Although GR has a single entry for this ISBN13, Amazon notes that this ISBN13 is actually a set of four books. Worldcat does not list any entry for the ISBN13. An internet search did not find an acceptable source for the ISBN13. No entry found on Arrow Publishing for this book either.

If you have the book that matches this ISBN13, please provide the page count using the info above.

Bea Hasham wrote: "Magician

This book has no page count on Worldcat, but the publisher states that the page count is 864 pages for this ISBN13. This differs greatly from the GR entry for the same ISBN13.

I made no changes in the GR entry at this time. Please verify that the additional pages contain info allowed on GR to count in the page count.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Bea, we seem to be stepping on each other's toes. I'm assuming you are taking over this one.

Bea David wrote: "Bea, we seem to be stepping on each other's toes. I'm assuming you are taking over this one."

I did not mean to step on your toes, David. Since you did not reference Worldcat, I was only trying to direct this discussion to that source. I worked backwards...until I reached The Magician, which was so very different between the publisher and GR.

Hasham wrote: "Ok Brea, A Game of Thrones books specifically says 801 pages bit never mind..Do whatever you want to do. I am from UK so it depends where that website come from. if it from America then it does make sense that you couldn't find it."

Hasham, actually my name is BEA. However, the sources we use are worldwide. The publisher site that I used was https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/97800.... This is a UK publisher.

lethe | 16368 comments For page counts, book-in-hand trumps everything else, especially publishers' websites. Publishers have a tendency to count all the pages, including any blank ones at the end.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments lethe wrote: "For page counts, book-in-hand trumps everything else, especially publishers' websites. Publishers have a tendency to count all the pages, including any blank ones at the end."

This was also my impression. As long as ISBN is reported, and page count includes the right things.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Bea wrote: "I did not mean to step on your toes, David. "

I don't know what you meant, but if I change the page count to one number based on book-in-hand and you are changing it back based on publisher website, nothing is accomplished.

message 19: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16368 comments Changed page count for A Game of Thrones, ISBN 9780007448036, back to 801.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Seems like Bea isn't taking over this one after all, so I'll move ahead.

I am going to ignore everything before #50 as these ISBNs were apparently incorrect.
#51:
A Clash of Kings: Done on #29, and now worldcat concurs
The Family Corleone: Done. no worldcat entry, data in GR was automatically created, preferring book-in-hand
The Godfather: Done. edition didn't exist on GR. Added it based on bookdepository entry with your pagecount. If you can scan us the cover we will add it
The Sicilian: Done. worldcat has no page count and data was automatically creates, preferring book-in-hand
Omertà: NOT Done. worldcat claims 410. please double check your ISBN and page count (420) and I will edit.
The Last Don: NOT Done. worldcat has 482. Amazon has 496, you claim 490. Please double check your ISBN and page count (92) and I will edit.

message 21: by David (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments #62 The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Done. No pagecount on worldcat, preferring book-in-hand over Amazon.

These are up to now the only ones we have with verified ISBN so if you want more, double check the ISBN on the cover and report again.

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments #66

The Last Don: nothing to do, already 496.
Omertà: Done

lethe | 16368 comments Hasham wrote: "I forgot to count a few more pages at the beginning"

Pages at the beginning should not be counted extra.

Only the last numbered page is important, plus any pages after that that are not blank (with nothing else after it), adverts for other books or previews.

Example:
801 last page of text
blank page
5 unnumbered pages with index
blank page
1 unnumbered page acknowledgements
3 blank pages
Correct number should be: 801 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 809, i.e. up to and including the acknowledgements.

If the adverts and previews are included in the page count of the book, they should be subtracted from the total number of pages.

message 24: by David (last edited Feb 05, 2017 11:08AM) (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments No it isn't a matter of opinion. It is a matter of policy.
The policy says:

The number of pages in a book is meant to include all content except for advertisements and preview chapters for other books. Included end material may include acknowledgments, afterwords, appendices, bibliographies, glossaries, indexes, notes, and suggested discussion questions.

Introductory material paged using roman numerals is not included in the total page count.
....
Page numbers should match the page numbers as listed in the book. If a book begins on page 6, for example, do not subtract from the final page count to determine the “actual” number of pages - simply list the number on the last page with countable content.

Seems pretty simple to me - simply list the number on the last page with countable content.

So either provide correct numbers according to this policy, or I'm afraid we can't use your help.

message 25: by David (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments I think if you can provide for each book:
1. The ISBN on the back cover/inside
2. The number on the last page with countable content

That would be useful.

message 26: by David (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments This seems to be too complicated, so lets forget about it.

message 27: by David (new)

David Raz (davidraz) | 13127 comments Hasham wrote: "It does 344 pages. 344 is extra pieces like acknowledging, advertising and introduce."

I pasted the policy saying acknowledgments should be included. You keep excluding it. I'm sorry, but I am going to leave this thread to someone else to handle if they wish.
