Let's see those awesome book piles, shelves, new hauls!

Post a photo of your bookshelves and/or reading area, or describe it. Have you built custom bookshelves, or have an unusual way to store/display your books?

Erin | 579 comments I wish I knew how to post a photo of my fancy schmancy (and kinda, sorta, ok... really expensive) bookcase... but I don't :-(

I think we are going to get StarMan to go over the steps for posting images again. I can't remember either!

"Shelfies" ... awesome title :)

How to add an image/photo to a Goodreads discussion post:

Goodreads says: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/4...

(look for 'image' instructions on the above page!)

If the above blows your mind, read on:

Ikea rocks! I wish there was one within 100 miles of where I live.

Here are some lazy bookshelves I built in a formerly useless small hallway:

bookshelves in hallway

TIP: the HTML code I used to make the above image appear is:

the "width" and "alt" attributes are optional.

Because of the way the doorframes are situated, the entire affair (4 shelves) is held up with only 2 brackets on the left side. The doorframes do the rest. No earthquakes here to worry about.

And it's just a single long board that I bought from Lowes and sawed into 4 pieces. Haven't even painted it yet.

Great use of space!

Just Elise (justelise) | 176 comments StarMan, I really like your shelves above the doorways. I considered doing something similar around my entire living room. But with weird walls that make stud-finding almost impossible, I figured they might not end up being very secure. I'm sure there are worse ways to die than being buried in books, but alas, I decided against the idea.

Semi-unrelated question: What code did you use to make the code box (or whatever trick that was to make the code show up under your picture)? Every code I've tried (except a really annoying method that involves substituting characters), GR has stubbornly refused to allow. Just wondering. :) Or is that in image? That might be easier, come to think of it.

You guessed it... I used an image (screenshot) of the actual code to make the code visible there, as in:

This is an IMAGE, not actual text:

I don't know another way to show the actual HTML code (inside the < and > brackets) without GR automatically trying to convert it to a link or image. But if I ever figure on out, I'll let y'all know!

~~~~~~
I'd like a room with bookshelves all the way around (all 4 walls), and up fairly high.
But I don't trust myself to find good spots for the brackets, either. However, if you have 2 or more doorframes (as in my little 6-feet long hallway), you can use it to support much of the weight:
(view spoiler)
(In the above pic, I'm standing under the 3rd doorframe, which supports the 4th, unseen shelf).
Better yet, I'd like a room or long hallway with built-in cubbies in the wall for books and stuff.
Or you could build something like this:
Some folks have made nice built-ins using Ikea stuff:
Just Elise (justelise) | 176 comments StarMan, the only way I've found for showing code that works on GR is explained here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Writing_C...
It requires substituting characters, e.g. < = & lt;
<spoiler>it looks like this</spoiler>
It's a headache, but if you're trying to make it copyable, it does work. I hope you find a less annoying way to do it that GR will allow. :)
I love your hallway shelves! The only places I could do that in my apartment are in awkward little hallways where I'm sure it would just seem cramped (and I wouldn't gain much shelf space). :(
The cubbyholes are great! One of these years, I do plan to makeover my bookcases - adding more shelves to make them ceiling height and adding doors. Someday. Maybe soon, actually, when I suddenly have a lot more time on my hands. ;) I'll post my shelfie pics after they're done. ;)
Those are some great ideas! Thank you!
