SOLVED. Bad thriller about a spy searching for witnesses to a UFO crash. [s]

There was a really terrible (both silly plot and bad writing) thriller that I read in 1999 or 2000, about an American who was sent to Europe to uncover the identities of a group of tourists who saw a crashed UFO and a group of dead aliens in Switzerland. He was unwittingly working for a conspiracy of powerful people who were plotting to stop the aliens from forcing humanity to protect the environment; the conspiracy would kill the witnesses once the hero had found out who they were. There was also a sub-plot following a surviving alien.

The witnesses were a somewhat improbably quirky multi-national group, including a gay Washington lobbyist and a chocolate-loving Russian woman. There was also a section where the hero gets an Italian prostitute to help him hide from the conspirators (after he realizes what's going on), and an odd flashback subplot where the hero's wife left him for a rich guy (called Monte Banks, but he calls him Money Bags) who turns out to be part of the conspiracy.
