We'll, I guess it's logical that Dickens would have more male characters but I am surprised how big the disparity is.

The link you posted stated: side note: just about any of these would make a good band name...

Of course, we've already had a band named Uriah Heep. Their big hit from the early 70s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKxZY...

Apparently there was another "power pop" band from the 70s named Artful Dodger, but I don't remember them, even though they were from around here. Here's one of their singles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYcIJ...

Then there is the utterly inexplicable Tiny Tim, also from the 60s/70s - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcSlc...

Any others?

I would love to see some current band revive interest in Dickens by taking a Dickensian name. I like the idea of a band called "Barkis is Willing" or the innuendo-filled "Dick Swiveller". "Silas Wegg," "Rogue Riderhood" or "Noddy Boffin" would all be excellent choices from our current selection. :-)

I'm saving the name "Rumpty's Perch" (coming up, I believe, in OMF) for my house, which sits up on a small hill, and which will prompt the question from friends and neighbors, "Who is Rumpty?" As I don't think my husband will adopt the moniker, I'll have to save it for my next dog. :-)

So do I, and I'm not supposed to have any problem other than senility. There are a lot of characters who come in and go out fairly quickly, not giving us time to really get to know and understand them.

John (jdourg) | 1219 comments Has anyone noticed that the top bar across the homepage for the Old Curiosity Club now obscures part of the picture of Dickens? The page template is not as it was.

I also experienced problems yesterday with access to site.

I wonder if anyone has had these issues?

I had connection problems yesterday, as well. They seem to be resolved this morning.

John, I couldn't get on the site at all this weekend, we were camping though so I didn't try that much, but a few times last week I got a message that the site was full, something like that, and to try later.

As for the homepage,it looks fine to me and I checked it a few times now logging on and off, I'm not sure what the problem could be or if others have it. I'll keep checking though to see if I can figure it out.

Ok, thanks. Appears to be a site issue that occurred over the weekend. I have had no connectivity problems today.

As to why the navigation bar got lower, thus lopping off half of Mr. Dickens' head, I have no idea.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I too had similar problems getting on over the weekend, now resolved.

The larger banner problem - it happened once before, and I reported it to the Feedback group as it caused me a lot of problems (I have my screen enlarged due to sight problems, and the notifications etc were actually cut off so I couldn't get into anything!)

To their credit, the technical team apologised, said it hadn't been properly tested and they would sort it out -and gave me a neat way of getting round it. So this time, since it doesn't actually inconvenience me, I think I'll just wait and see :)

Hmm, the banner still looks good to me. I wonder why I'm not having the problem.

Mine is just a little deeper than usual. But as long as it doesn't decapitate poor Dickens, I'm happy ;)

The interesting thing about this is it reminds me of the troubles I had with my internet service provider -- Verizon. For months, an opening page all askew. They told me they were working on the problem. It was like building the Transcontinental RR because it took them months to debug the problem out.

message 63: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) :( Well if it caused me problems I'd be onto the Goodreads team again, so I'm quite lucky it doesn't, really.

message 64: by John (new)

John (jdourg) | 1219 comments I was not sure where to post this -- but I noticed that on the homepage for here, Charles no longer has half his head cropped off.

Progress has been made.

message 65: by John (new)

John (jdourg) | 1219 comments Just a general question.

I previously had my format here on "by date" so I would have to scroll to bottom (or go through the pages) to reach most recent post.

I've inverted it now, so it is most recent post at top.

I think I prefer this and was wondering if anyone had a take on it, pro or con? It seems a little easier this way, unless someone has a reason why the other way is better? I'm wondering, though, if Chapter summaries are therefor inverted? Not really problem, just have to be sure I pay attention to that.

Hi John

Wow! I've always had my setting on the most recent entry at the foot of all the previous entries simply because I really didn't know it could be reversed. I am a computer Luddite.

Honestly, I'm so used to it now - as well as frightened of change - I'll stick with what I have. But what a great question!

How does everyone else have their settings?

Thanks Peter. I'm curious as well about settings. I'm not very advanced either with some site formatting and it tends to be (for me anyway) a matter of trial and error.

message 68: by Bionic Jean (last edited Aug 12, 2017 09:36AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I always like the most recent post to be first. It's easy enough to click to the top of the page, to see a few earlier posts, or click on the number 1 for the first post in the thread.

It's a matter of personal taste though, I think, and I like how we have so many options :) I'm always editing my shelves to see them a different way, for instance. But I don't use an app, and apparently there are quite severe limitations there.

I have it by date, BUT I always go to the discussions tab and click on "unread" so that it starts on the first unread post. Then I can scroll down through the unread posts in order top to bottom but never have scroll through posts I've already read (as long as the unread feature keeps working right!)

Ah, that is helpful to me. But it gives me all that I've not read from the Great Expectations threads. I've found the Alerts to be most helpful to me -- they cover only the recent posts, so everything is OMF related.

Everyman gave me this tip awhile ago, and it's the best advice I've gotten on using Goodreads. I get the email updates, but still miss some random posts, and then, of course, the emails stop coming. But looking at the discussions tab ensures that I don't miss a thing.

After you're read what you want to, if you select the "mark all as read" you should only get new posts. I've found that you have to do that a number of times before it settles down, and still isn't perfect, but pretty good.

John (jdourg) | 1219 comments A question.

Ideally, we will finish OMF in mid October?

message 74: by Peter (new)

Peter | 3568 comments Mod
My schedule shows October 5-11 chapters 12-17 of Book the Fourth.

Yes, we set 11 October as the Finish Date. This will, as usual, be followed by one week of the general discussion of the book.

Remember the Alamo?

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Well at least we've heard of it! Guy Fawkes, anyone? (Not Tristram!)

message 90: by Tristram (new)

Tristram Shandy | 5005 comments Mod
The Alamo was with John Wayne and Richard Widmark. But they also have a later version, which did not really stick to my memory the same way the first film did. Duke also directed it, but he was a far better actor than director.

Thanks for bringing it up. Maybe, I'm going to watch that movie with my son tomorrow.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I enjoyed that - especially the last one! Was the silent film made at the time, do you think? ;)

message 97: by John (new)

John (jdourg) | 1219 comments I'm unsure if American Notes is on the list for the group. I thoroughly enjoyed it; funny, insightful, and probably as good as any "travel" book I've ever read (I enjoy travel books, hiking, trips, fishing, sites, etc.)

It would be a worthwhile selection if ever considered by the group.

My husband just picked up this title for me at a used book store. It's always nice to have as part of the collection, bu I'm much more likely to actually read it with the group! Anxious as I am to get to the three earlier novels I haven't read yet, I'd happily postpone them if the group decided to read this in the interim. Though after reading Chuzzlewit, I'm a bit concerned that my American patriotic pride might be wounded!

Thanks for sharing, John - Bleak House is my second favorite, next to ACC, so I always enjoy reading reviews.
