Of course, whether Tristram and Peter were intending to mock you, I can't say. But not I!

Of course. :-)
(Or should I say, "Of course!!!!!!"? Nope. Just can't bring myself to do it.)
Peter,
I sincerely apologize for using the word "club" when it should be "stick" with regard to hockey. Maybe I was thinking of golf in a way, but it may also be that I was thinking of the physical intensity that is characteristic of an ice-hockey match, and in that context, "club" sounded like the most natural word to me, sticks and stones NOT being able to break my bones, but clubs being a different matter ;-)
It just shows that in everything concerning sports, I am just a complete non-entity. I put my foot in it the other week, when I accompanied my son to one of his handball matches. My son's team was losing, and all the parents of those lusty men, or rather 9-year olds, were shouting encouragement (to put it nicely), and when I told my son that he should not worry because after all, it was just a game, and there were more important things to be really good at, I nearly got kicked out of the gymnasium ;-)
Poor me ...

I cannot believe I am talking about Sport...!

If you have a serious side I assure you we do have serious discussions about our current read! And if you have a silly side too, you'll fit right in. Hop on over to the "Three Jolly Bargemen" for the latest guffaw ;)

No worries. Perhaps because more than one hockey stick/club found its way to whack my head in my younger years may, in part, explain why my singing voice is somewhat wanting at times.

Ah, yes. You and Peter played very different hockey.

Hello everyone
I just signed up and am also new to Goodreads, so I'm working on getting my books all listed on my page.
I haven't read a lot of Classics, but have read a few, including Great Expectations. That was a long time ago, so reading it again for the second time.
I don't have much to tell about myself. I live in a one horse town in Ohio. I've been married since birth . Our family is all grown , so I have lots of free time.
I'm not sure how I ended up loving books so much, as I grew up in a house where I was the Odd One, who tried sneaking a book to the dinner table and reading in bed. No one else could quite "get" why I liked to read so much. It's nice to find like-minded people in here that will understand.
I have a few comments/ questions , but will go find someplace else in here to put them .
Looking forward to meeting you all.

Welcome Julie, we are glad to have you here. I also was the odd one in my family but for so many reasons I can't think of them all, one of them was definitely reading books, no one else would have dreamt of doing such a thing. :-)

Oh, I'll also welcome our members, new and old - the old ones, you know who you are - to our new group. I'm sure I've missed a whole bunch of you earlier.
Thank you, Kim
Maybe we are looking at it the wrong way. Maybe we were the lucky ones of the bunch , to discover what a joy books can give us. The others all missed out.

Welcome! You've certainly found a family of fellow readers here.
Good luck listing your books -- I frankly gave up after the first bunch, I would rather be reading them than listing them! But it will be fun to see what you do put on your shelf.

Thanks for the welcome, Everyman and Linda..
I know, trying to enter a lifetime of books in here will be a chore. I'll probably chip away at it slowly. I will never remember them all.

The historic first meeting, on Dickens' birthday, of course. In the background is Peter's Palace. The doormat reads: Welcome, Ye Olde Curiosities.

You look wonderful together. I'll have to gather those Maryland members and meet in person one of these days.

Welcome Julie
The good news is we are all the odd ones here, but when together everyone seems normal.
Let's all enjoy GE together. A very normal thing to do..

Just imagine ... the first meeting on the date of Dickens's birth. I do have separate furnished rooms for each of you when you visit Victoria. Vanessa will be, of course, our official historian.

Thank you Vanessa and Peter. Beautiful photo . How exciting that you got to meet in person. :)
Could any of you that are from England be able to post a link or photos of what the actual area G E. takes place, such as the moors or the church type area ?

Please do!

Though I might not add the extra possessive 's', unless I spent more time at the Jolly Bargemen... ;)

There you go.

I would also gather the Pennsylvania members but I think I'm the only one. Everyone is supposed to be coming here at Christmas anyway, they just never show up.

I live in a tiny little town surrounded by Amish (almost, we do have a Wal-Mart, you can always find the Amish there), about a 40 minute drive north of Harrisburg. You and I are probably 2 1/2 hours apart - that's my guess anyway. I'm going to go look that up - how far apart we are that is. And welcome to our group Dianne.
According to Google we live 119 miles apart - if you're near the King of Prussia Mall that is. And right now it would take me 2 hours and 3 minutes to get there. At least Google says so.
I think we can make it work someday.

And I'm absolutely delighted to see a photo of Peter and Vanessa. Please thank whoever took it (Peter's wife?) very much from me :) I'm sure you will have had a fantastic time, and hope with all the inclement weather it wasn't too much of a Dickens of a job arranging last-minute changes to the plan ;)

A warm and hearty welcome to you, Julie! And please feel invited to join us in our discussions. We have Great Expectations ;-)

I have never even tried to shelve all the books here that I read so far, but I put some of them on the re-read shelf. In my family, I was also the only person who could and usually would be seen with my nose in a book, but luckily, reading seems to be catching after all because my son is devouring book after book. So I've finally got some company ;-)

It's nice to see some of us have met in person. Like Jean, I'm living in another time zone, but there might be some chance for me and Jean to meet; I would just have to persuade my wife to go to England with me, which she is a bit reticent about, not knowing the language. So it'll be Spanish-speaking countries for a while.

Hello Jean
I'll go hunt for it now. Thanks for the info.

Before I arrived, Peter befriended another Toronto transplant, who just happened to be a photographer (he even had a REAL camera)! But to simplify matters, he just used my phone. And he expressed an interest in the book club. I've asked Peter to pass on my thanks, as well... he'll be glad to know his pics were appreciated around the world :)

Fabulous!! What a great photo of you two, and on Dickens' birthday too. :)

Welcome Dianne! It's good to see you here. :)

Thank you for the invite! For those who don't know me, I am Kate, living in Sydney, Australia, although I don't like people to forget that I am actually English! I am also a teacher, specifically a high school English teacher.
Work has prevented me from keeping up with the Great Expectations read over the last few weeks, so I'd better get a move on! I'll be back later with my comments.
Kate
Thank goodness you have found us. Give the students lots of self-directed projects that are massive in size. Have the other students mark them with rubrics.
Here's hoping you can join us for our read of Great Expectations.

I was poking at Tristram, earlier, not you Mary Lou! I know how he feels about exclamation points. Just all in good fun, I hope.
