He is a kind of uncle figure known as the dependent, he turned up just after Bento was born when there was illness on the plantation and cured people as his father was grateful he invited him to live with them which he continues to do even after confessing that his cures were fake.

He remains a member of the household by being agreeable to everyone, providing advice and distraction.

He is referred to as the "dependent". This man seems to be a companion and maybe a male nursemaid to Bento.

He kind of appeared on the plantation shortly after Bento's birth, posing as a doctor. Bento's father urged him to stay on after he cured some of the plantation's workers from illness. He is referred to as a dependent. He has ingratiated himself into the family by making himself indispensable to them.
