When does the book begin chronologically, once the narrator returns to his past? How old are Bento and Capitú at this time?

Technically it begins as soon as he tells us the title however in the chronological sense it begins when he is 15 and Capitu is 14 and he overhears a conversation about his future.

It goes back to 1857, when Bento was 15 and Capitu was 14. Bento was behind a door overhearing Jose Diaz telling Bento's mother that there might be a problem getting Bento into the seminary due to his budding relationship with Capitu.
