Kristie | 3595 comments I haven't finished any yet this month!

I am about 1/2 way through The Girl in the Garden though. It takes a while to get through because there is no dialogue. Not a single set of parenthesis in the whole thing! It's very strange and leaves me feeling like the book is just a massive long paragraph with no breaks. It makes my eyes tired to read it. At least, I do like the story so far. I thought I might have to quit in the beginning due to the writing style.

I am also starting The Forgotten Girls today. It has been on my shelf since December of 2015! Nope, not a typo. lol I have two really old books from the end of 2015 that I need to get to, so I figured I had better start and finally knock it off my shelf.

So, I will at least get to two this month. And if a miracle occurs, it could even be 3.

In January, I didn't post a wrap-up in the previous thread because I'm lazy but I have posted 16 reviews for NetGalley. This month has been full of disappointing reads from NetGalley, one 1 star, three 2 stars, and one three star. Here's to hoping that the rest of February is a better reading month for me!

message 55: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Yeah I seriously need some less disappointing reads soooo much.

Just posted a new review. My highest rated book from NetGalley this month, would recommend!!

Oh I've read a book without parenthesis before and it did my head in. ... I just remembered who it was - Tim Winton - I think it is part of his style that you never really know what is dialogue, but I found it quite distracting

Just keep chipping away :)
Also, quite a few people here have not read some of their older books and just gave feedback apologising to the publisher. It then clears it from your shelf and may be worth considering if you find there are books you are no longer interested in

Thanks for the tip. I had some books on my shelf dating back to 2013 and I sent my apologies to the publisher. Now my ratio is up to 90% and I've got the 80% badge added. Hopefully this will help me getting approved easier.

Hi Alex. I really like your idea. Can I get an idea of what you included in your note to the publisher?

Thank you

I said in short why I couldn't read the book in time and apologized. It wasn't that long but I thought it would be more embarassing sending a review 3 or 4 years after it should have been in.

message 63: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments Thank you Alex,

I took your advice, and now after clearing out some really old stuff, I got myself up to a 64% and I'm trying to only read NetGalley books the next 4 weeks so I can pop out the reviews for current books.

message 64: by Kristie (last edited Feb 16, 2017 01:33PM) (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I have finally finished a book this month! This one was on my shelf for a little over a year. I have one more really old book from the end of 2015, then the rest are all from October 2016 or newer. Finally getting caught up to where my books are somewhat current.

Kristie | 3595 comments I just checked my dates and the book that I'm currently reading was from October of 2016. After that I have only 2 older books (the 2015 and another October 2016) left on my 'older than 3 months' shelf. I'm getting there! My goal is to have just 'current titles' and to read them within 3 months, so they stay off the other shelf. I know, lofty goals. lol

My goal is actually to not have any "current titles" . . . I feel like those have priority since they have still to come out instead of, you know, being published for two years...

message 69: by Kazen (new)

Kazen Another five star review for us, yea! Historical fiction with a touch of the magical - so. good. And I may have the cover art on my wall. Because. :D

Passing Strange by Ellen Klages → 5★ review

I've also picked up a few books:

The Stone Collection (The Debwe Series) by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm Noteworthy by Riley Redgate Seeing the Better City How to Explore, Observe, and Improve Urban Space by Charles R. Wolfe

Kristie | 3595 comments I'm almost done with The Girl in the Garden. I'm at 89%, but had to put it aside for a team challenge this week in another group. I should still finish it before the end of the month.

I also ended up requesting another book, The Forever Summer. Its initial ratings are good and it fits another challenge I'm doing. This month is going to be almost a wash for me with NetGalley.

message 72: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I seem to be going slow and steady with netgalley books. Down to 2 that are over three months, but a couple more are about to drop in to that amount of time.

The problem is more recent requests are just so interesting!!

message 73: by Lara (new)

Lara | 676 comments Well, last month was a loss for me due to life. So, I made a point this month to try to make up some of the slow going--though I added books as well. Sigh. Anyway, I just posted reviews of 12 books to NetGalley, some of which I had read last month. It's great to get them off my shelf!

message 74: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Oooh twelve in one bunch! The most I've ever done was two at the same time, and that feels so amazing I can only guess at what 6 times that would be like!

message 75: by Lara (new)

Lara | 676 comments Yes, it's great to see my ratio improve as well ;-)

Thanks Kristie! I keep flirting with the 80%--sometimes above, then slipping below again.
