Clarification

I loved from the storm but I'm a bit hazy about the photo where you see Claudette and her daughter with Joe in the background. Can anyone shed any light on how/when he went back, and why did he leave again.

As I thought that he did'nt discover his 'humanity' until he cuddled the girl in Laos or am I getting characters mixed up or am I just a bit THICK
