The book is set at the time of the Hallifax Explosion of December 6, 1917.
A ship carrying munitions collided with a ship carrying passengers. The ensuing explosion killed many people and flattened all the buildings within a certain radius and caused great destrction.

I have never read this book before and neither did I know about the explosion; so this is going to be a read of discovery for me.

I have started reading and am already loving the characters and description of Halifax and it's people at the time.

I have finished the book and here in my review:
I knew nothing about the role of Halifax as a major port during WWI or the explosion that occurred there in December 1917. This part of the story was well written, slowly building up to that fatal day. There was a love story enmeshed in with this which I did not feel was as well written. The ending was also not to the same standard. This was the first novel by this author and based on the potential I saw in the first part of the novel, I would definitely read another by him.
