If you want a bit of his 'lighter books' try Coraline, The Graveyard Book or The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Thanks for mentioning The Art of Racing in the Rain, since I own the novel. I just DNFed the other book I was reading for the quirky tag, so onto plan B.
