Reading challenge - Mythology

Would Beowulf count as a book based on mythology? Or did it become the basis of mythology? Or do we even know since the author is unknown? Am I overthinking this in an attempt to avoid work on a dreary Friday?

Yes. :)

Actually, it's been so long since I read it or considered it, that I'm not going to be very helpful except to say, that as a piece of feminist fiction, surely this one qualifies. Passed down through oral tradition, the female monster, Grendel's mother, is the ultimate challenge for poor mortal man. Beowulf does enshrine all sorts of values that transcend gender and I appreciated that, values of community as well as identity.
