(view spoiler)[ Ok so what I got is Cyra's "gift" emerged when her brother was stealing one of her good memories and replacing it with a memory in which their father had him torture someone from the resistance... During this transfer Cyra developed the gift of pain but something is wrong with it.. The dr. her mother took her to says she is "internalizing" her gift on herself as well as externalizing it when she touches others because for some reason she feels both she and others deserve the pain. It never explained why exactly but as events unfold it does show that she feels she deserves the pain. Her mother dies and somehow its her fault but honestly it never explains in exact details. It does say right after the part about her mom that their father passes away on some sort of sojourn or expedition really soon after their mom passes. (hide spoiler)]

Finished! I really think I made a dumb move listening to this on audio... I got lost at the start, lost again in the middle and lost at the end. I retained some of the plot and the characters, but overall I didn't really know what was going on. I definitely need to re-read this as a physical, because I could tell that what I did read I really loved: it wasn't centered around romance, there was dual POV, family drama, two sides of a war, magic gifts. It was really exciting! I didn't really like Cyra as a character because I couldn't relate to her in any way, but Akos seemed okay. There's something I always just prefer about male POV, none of this stereotyping with either passive whiney female or aggressive sassy badass. I hate how those are the only two options for females, and for a fantasy the girl must always be defiant and brave. I need more male POV.

I started this book on audio as well but I kept zoning out and not paying attention and I was so confused, so I had to go back and restart it on ebook haha.

(view spoiler)[I'm kinda loving this book now. The friendship between Cyra and Akos is giving me life, and I normally hate it if in a YA fantasy the romance takes centre-stage, but I don't think it's the case in this book. They're so cute. I don't like that Cyra's brother now knows that they care about each other and is intent on exploiting it to get what he wants.

I love that Cyra joined the renegades to assassinate her brother. I hate him so much and I want him dead. Shame it fell through!

(view spoiler)[Finally finished! I really enjoyed this book. The concept was interesting, and even though there's a lot to process in the beginning, I grew to love it.

Wasn't expecting the reveal about Cyra! I was kinda thinking that Akos would turn out to not be related to his family, but I did not see that reveal coming! I wonder who she is then, and why she was living with Ryzek's family and why they were pretending she was their daughter??

The romance between Cyra and Akos is everything, and I can't wait to read the next one and see how it develops further!

I just looked up the controversy I can see where they are coming from.

I feel like I am losing the plot of this book. I am a bit confused by it all. Hoping it will make sense.

I finished and I hate it. It was mainly about character building then plot building and that was just annoying as I completely lost the whole plot.

I am on page 193 and I am having the same feeling about the book. I was enjoying it. Now I am finding myself having to reread some parts to understand other part. I am going to try and finish this tonight.

Nope this book was not for me. Maybe it wasn't the right time for me to read it but I didn't enjoy the rest to of the book. I had to force myself to finish. I had so much hope for this book after the first half and my friend told me how much she enjoyed it.
