There are a million ways to promote your books, so I am creating this thread with things we have done or are thinking of doing. This is a place to kick it around and discuss why it is a good or maybe not so good idea.

So, Julie found this thing called Books on the Subway. You pay them a dollar per book and they leave them on different trains in the city. (Manhattan). I sent in a bunch of Michael's books and forgot about them. He is getting a bit of sales Stillwell and The After House are in the top 100 of their genre today. Could they have been noticed? The following is her letter to us and I will post her link when I can find it.

This is Hollie here, I run BOTS with Rosy. We'd love your Son's books to be part of our project.

The process is simple: you post the books to us (anywhere between 5-20 works). Then we specify a day for the book drop (sometimes we tie in to events, if relevant). And we leave the books on the subway that day!

We do charge a small fee of $1 per book to cover the cost of stickers, as we fund this project ourselves.

Do let me know how many books you'd like to donate and when you'd like to arrange the book drop for. We're currently booked up until January, but let us know what date in Jan would work for you and we'll try arrange it for you.

C.L. Lynch (cllynchauthor) | 210 comments I'm taking Mark Dawson's Self Publishing Formula course and it lays a heavy stress on building a good mailing list. He says to write several books, give one away in exchange for a mailing address, and if they like your book, they'll buy more of them and stay on your list. Then you can notify them whenever you publish a new book, or let them know when you need more reviews, etc.

Man makes $450,000 a year selling his books so he must be on to something.

Since I only have the one book out right now, my big goal is simply to capture those readers who liked my book so I can let them know when my sequel comes out. I'm writing free bonus content so the people who enjoyed my book and want more can sign up to get the free stories. That way they get something out of it, and I get their contact info so I can let them know when History (and eventually, the third in the series) comes out.

Take a look at some of the other authors on there! It's like a less exclusive version of our swage bags.

Marie Silk | 208 comments On my last cruise I ran into a couple who was "hurrying" to the ship library as soon as we embarked because according to them, "the best books are the first to go". Well I had a look at the library and the selection was pretty...sad...it didn't look like any of the books were written within the last few decades. The check out system is the honor system: writing your name and the name of the book on the sign out sheet. I thought putting my books into the ship libraries could be pretty cool (and I plan to on my next cruise). So readers from all over the world might either discover them on the library bookshelves or the sign out sheet, or maybe catch a glimpse of someone reading by the pool...also leaving a nice stack of bookmarks on the library check out desk could be fun :D.

That's a great idea. I wonder if we contact Princess or Royal Caribbean and ask if they'd like some extra books for their ships if they'd be interested.
Brit made a brochure for each of our brands. I sent them to local libraries along with the sheet on how to order from Createspace ( you can print it- I'm not sure where it is but it's on their site.) We have gotten quite a few reviews saying, I found this book in my library.

Christine (christineroney) | 261 comments I really like the idea of my books being left on subways in New York!
Carole, thank you for the link.

His ratings bounced a bit on Amazon, so it must have lead to some sales. I monitor his paperbacks. That didn't change. He handles the Kindles and I haven't had time to look at it with him- maybe tomorrow.
