Please list the book you intend to read or recommendations for this category.

Kelli I've already read it, but Until We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis is wonderful!

Ella Enchanted sounds as though it will work for this category. Also, BWB suggested The Snow Child however I read it during 2016. It wasn't a favorite of mine but some readers liked the magical realism more than I did.

Amy I've been listening to the Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Cinder audiobook. Cyborgs and androids are living alongside humans in New Beijing. It's loosely based on the Cinderella story and has a huge fan following of the series. I'm loving it so far.

Teresa I'm reading numerous books this year that fall under this category: A Tale Dark and Grimm, Rapunzel's Revenge, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, Book of A Thousand Days. A couple that might be a stretch are The Golem and the Jinni and Odd and the Frost Giants.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) I will be reading Cruel Beauty for this one! I already read Cinder, Throne of Glass, and Ella Enchanted (re-read) but am counting them for different tasks!

After some research, I think I'll read The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling, as these "wizarding world" stories draw on elements of various muggle fairy tales, including the Brother's Grimm.

message 9: by Teresa (new)

Teresa I read A Tale Dark and Grimm. The premise is Hansel and Gretel walk out of their story and into other Grimm tales. Actually, H and G alter each story so it becomes about them. I had high hopes for this book, based on it's Gr ratings. The stories were imaginative and entertaining. The narrator ruined it for me, though. He prefaced, interrupted, and ended every story with warnings about bloodiness, are you sure you want to read it, are you sure, are you sure, get a sitter for your kids because they can't listen to this, check under the bed to see if your kids are hiding so they can listen, Mr Obvious statements, I told you so's, at least a half dozen fake The Ends. It was so ridiculous and distracting I got angry.

Oh wow that sounds really annoying!

Cassandrah Woyak | 2 comments I read A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas and it was AMAZING!!! I love Beauty and the Beast and this was a great spin on the story.

message 12: by Mandie (new)

Mandie (mystickah) I read Neil Gaiman's The Sleeper and the Spindle.

Teresa To get the mad feeling of A Tale Dark and Grimm out of my system, I read Book of a Thousand Days. It was excellent. I couldn't put it down, actually did stay up all night reading it. Totally screwed up my sleeping schedule. It's based on the Grimm fairy tale Maid Maleen, which I'd never heard of. It's not in any of the Grimm books I downloaded from Project Gutenberg.

Sounds good!

Stina (stinalyn) | 29 comments The only one I've read so far is Uprooted, but I may use it for a different prompt. I think I just bought Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast in a Humble Bundle, but I don't want a retelling to be my first exposure to the story, so I won't read it until I've read La Belle et la Bête.

Brittany | 16 comments Currently on a Beauty and the Beast kick (thanks Disney), so...Beastkeeper by Cat Hellison, Hunted by Megan Spooner, The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco, Firelight by Kristen Callihan, and Beast by Brie Spangler. Plus at least one on my Kindle that I'm not thinking of.

I have a different opinion about this book but I did put this as my entry for this category. :)

Sarah Sutton (sarahamsutton) | 21 comments I read Alice inAlice in Zombieland by Nickolas Cook. I wasn't a fan.

Therese | 46 comments I read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It had been on my TBR shelf for a while, and while it had interesting spots and plots, it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. There was a good story in here but the author didn't quite get it out. Still I may tackle the next book in the series one day… Has anyone else read this book? Thoughts?

message 20: by Teresa (last edited May 15, 2017 12:38PM) (new)

Teresa Therese, I read Wicked last year or the year before. I didn't like it either. It has potential but it's a worthless read as-is, imo.

I liked parts of it, and if it had gone another way, I might have been able to see it. I didn't get how she could be so cold to her son that she didn't even remember, not to mention other things. Did you read the next book? I will probably cave because Oz fascinates me.

message 22: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Therese, I was so disappointed I couldn't bring myself to read the next book. If you do, let us know your opinion of it.

I rarely read the same author twice in the same year, but if there is a prompt that the next book will fit in some challenge that I read next year, I will let you know.

I've read the whole series. I liked them but Maguire's writing is very specific, not everyone likes it.

Thank you for your input. I don't think I will ever understand why some people love certain books while others can't stand them. We are all wonderfully different, but I'm still searching for more ways to like more books :-)
