Alexia (travelingleaf) | 33 comments The time is set in the early years of England (I'd like to say before the 1500s). The hero is at court, not to find a wife, but because the King asked him to come. The heroine is young, 18 I believe. They are to be arranged into marriage by the king if I remember correctly. It starts with her seeing him in the gardens and them flirting a little (him reluctantly). He doesn't want to remarry due to his last wife dying in childbirth. There's many mentions of her "screams echoing of the castle walls". He is so scared for the female because she is so small and young. He has her insert these sponges that are supposed to "prevent conception" but after she realizes he can't feel them she secretly stops wearing them. Obviously she becomes pregnant (natural progression, right?) and the birth is something that really stuck out to me, due to multiple reasons. 1) I was 15 when I read this and instead of the heroine giving birth on the bed traditionally they had her on her knees holding the foot/headboard. 2) she was biting onto a piece of leather to keep from screaming and scaring the husband, but it terrified him to not hear any sound. 3) When she gave birth to the second boy she was still feeling pain, so they called the stablehand up to find out what was happening(the heroine also really trusted him, I believe they've known each other since she was little) 4) after feeling around he realized there was a third baby, and at one point someone had to reach up in there to turn the child around. After everything was said and done, the third child (a girl) was extremely weak and they didn't know if would make it, but after weeks of gaining health she did. They also cut the first child's hand I believe, to mark the heir. Why the birth was the one thing to stick in my mind I have no idea but maybe someone could help? TIA

Brittany | 312 comments Highland Wedding by Hannah Howell? One reviewer wrote the hero didn't want to marry or have children after his first wife died in childbirth and wouldn't bed his tiny new bride unless she took steps to prevent pregnancy.
