Martine (fougeredange) | 3 comments As a GR librarian it is not clear on what the pagination should be for books that have both roman numerals and regular numbers for pagination, For example, a book itself shows 9(ix) pages for preliminary information, and then the text starts at page 1 up until 303. Do I enter 303 or 312 in the page field?

Arenda | 26450 comments Introductions with Roman numerals are not included in the page count on GR, see https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2... (second paragraph).

Marcos Kopschitz | 122 comments Yes, this is the standard procedure as in the Librarian Manual.

However, I don't exctly see why this rule was created like this.

As in the same page:
"The number of pages in a book is meant to include all content except for advertisements and preview chapters for other books. Included end material may include acknowledgments, afterwords, appendices, bibliographies, glossaries, indexes, notes, and suggested discussion questions."

If we are to be so comprehensive - a good approach - why leave out of the count "Introductory material paged using roman numerals"?

Martine (fougeredange) | 3 comments Marcos, I completely agree with you. Even library catalogs will enter all types of pagination in the description fields.
