Uthred returns to Mercia after capturing Cnut's wife and kids from where Haesten had them stashed. Did I forget anything, or did that little happen in these 4 chapters?

I'm not bored, but this book seems slower than the last ones. Hopefully it's all building to a big ending.

I think that is indeed it. you are right about just not much in this ,part.

I sort of powered through the whole book so I didn't notice any major slow spots. It did seem like Uhtred was not quite himself... he couldn't seem to anticipate things as well as usual and was unsure at times. Maybe that gives the impression of a plodding narrative.

So Uhtred saves the day, or so it seems.

Also, he's assembling a small circus of captured wives and children!

I especially liked the deception with the piglet and the dead girl. Gruesome, but brilliant.
