So Uthred didn't have the best of plans for taking back his birthright. I can't say I'm surprised it didn't work out well.

He was lucky to get out there alive and without losing any of his men.

I guess revenge on his uncle will have to do. I wonder what he's going to do with cousin's wife and cousin?

And what will he do now?

His uncle did make a good point about his inability to hold any amount of land he's ever had..

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yes I think Uthred is a lot better warlord than Lord. Well except for the Bettenberg plan - it was horrible. Well and he even had some luck (the second gate) that he didn't capitalize on.

Richard Eyres (richardeyres) I got a little frustrated with the battle. I knew he would fail (after all, there are more books), but would have hoped for something a little different.
Never mind - he has some captives/hostages now. Lets see where it leads.

So you think the series would end if he took back his home? I assume it will end with his death.

We know from past books that he's lived to a pretty old age. I think he's also sick/dying. It may be that the books we're reading are meant to represent a history he's dictating about his life to a scribe/historian character we haven't met yet.

We don't exactly what age that is though. We also know he's married (again) and that his wife is Christian, because "her priests" seem to annoy him.

So any time he's in mortal danger thus far, I tend to be like "well who else will die here" because I know it won't be him.

My hope is that the few glimpses we've had of "the present" in the past books are taking place in Bettenberg..

Suzanne | 1582 comments Yes he MUST get into Bettenberg at some point. I think it is becoming my obsession too.

Ctgt | 629 comments He really seems to be "winging it" through the first half of this book. Not sure if that is the author's intent or not.

Kat | 1178 comments Maaaaan I really thought he'd get away with retaking Bebbanburg. When the high gate was open I literally almost yelled out loud "gogogo!"

It was such a good plan!

Now everything is open again. I hope he'll go to Dunholm and shack up with Ragnar. Because he really hasn't got a lot of other places left to go and I miss Ragnar.
