Don't you love it when your high expectations about a book are actually met? The Nix has definitely done that for me. I felt fairly confident that I would like it after reading comparisons to Franzen, whom I love, and I was not disappointed. Nathan Hill has demonstrated himself to be a masterful storyteller. In the same style as Franzen, throughout the novel he deconstructed his incredibly flawed and complex characters and put them back together again. Part historical, part coming of age, part family saga, The Nix hit all of the right spots for me. It was at times hilarious, at times sorrowful, but always entertaining, and I did not find it overwritten despite its size. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but if you are a fan of a sprawling character study with social commentary thrown in the mix then this might be for you.

So looking forward to reading this, except this morning I have an extremely bad case of hype disappointment. How does a person determine if a book is for them, I wonder?
I think only by trying Amy. I think this one might be for me. I'm starting to match tastes a little bit. I think if Susie, Jen & Linda agree, I'm probably safe.
Susie Jen and I tend to like the same kinds of books, and often differ from Linda. So the Linda aspect of this is what tips the scales.

Nicole R - I think you will like this book. Jennifer - I think you too but I'm not 100% sure
This book resonated with me a lot because I was a 60's flower child.
