Red52 Ema, the Captive. Brilliant prose with beautiful descriptions of the Pillahuinco Basin and the Indians who lived there. Ema is a white captive who instead of decrying her fate, sets out to live where she finds herself on her own terms. She changes her circumstances several times through the course of the book. And With each change she improves her life and the lives of those around her. The culture of the Indians is an integral part of the story. The painting of their bodies. Smoking. Gambling. The way money is printed and used. The shifting family groups. Going on vacations. Cesar Aira is a prolific Argentinan writer. This is the second of his novels that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed.
