Bill Hey all! The poll is now closed for the June/ July group read. Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin received the most votes and 2 books were tied for second so we will have 3 choices to select from. The other two books are Jar City by Arnaldur Indridason and The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth. The threads will be opened 15 Jun

General rules for Group Reads

1) Important: If your nomination wins - you will be the discussion moderator.

2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check the bookshelves to see the authors we've read in the past year. Check this link to the bookshelf page https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

7) Finally, a word about series - the joy or bane of a mystery reader's life! Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series or can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Have fun and good luck!!

Also please keep an eye on the Games section as Nancy and Hayes are working on new challenges for the summer that should peak your interests!

Janice (janiceb) | 25 comments I nominate 'Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter' by Tom Franklin. Can you give me some advice. I have a hard time finding the comments about the current month's books. Sometimes I'm lucky and find them. Sometimes (like now , I can't).

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments I'd like to nominate A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away.

Christopher Brookmyre has been described as a Scottish Carl Hiaasen, as his books are often a mix of action, politics and laugh-out-loud humour, although I think Brookmyre is an even better writer.

Are you using a phone app? or your computer?

For the first I can't help you, I have no idea how it works.

On your computer:
** Go to the group's main page.
** Scroll down past the book covers in the "currently reading" section and you will see the gray bar with "discussion board"
** The first folder is "important items".
** The second folder is "group read discussions". Click on that
** The most recent book discussions have "sticky" asterisks on them and you will find them at the top of the list. All the others are below that and are listed in order of last activity. (If you click on that triangle next to 'last activity' it inverts the order from most recent to least recent.)

I've been using my phone app. Maybe best to use my computer. I'll play with that. Thanks!

This is the third in the series, David. Will it hurt those of us who haven't read the first two if this is chosen? Would it be better maybe to start with the first?

Well, then, I apologize. I didn't realize that there were conditions of no new hardcover novels when nominating a book.

message 21: by Manish (new)

Manish (manishg0yal) I nominate The Firm by John Grisham.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments It's mainly making sure it's easily available for everyone to get hold of. Lots of people would rather wait for the paperback version of a book. In this case that book was released today in the UK.

Personally I only buy hardbacks if it's an author I love, or a book that really grabs my interest.

I think it's also on Kindle or in ebook format. I nominated it..if people don't want to vote for it, that's okay too. It's just out here as well, and it's a book I want to read.

It wouldn't hurt to wait a bit for it to come out in paperback. I can see it's available in hard cover, kindle and audio formats, but having said that, it just came out in Jun 2014.

I don't mean to be argumentative at all with anyone, but I really just want clarification: a book that is not in paperback yet isn't eligible to be nominated?

Indeed we did, Nancy. Thanks for picking that up. Do you have another suggestion, Anamil? Check through the bookshelf to see what else we've read, or just scroll through the group read thread.

I don't think so, Nancy, all the guidelines say is that it has to be available in more than one format and you're quite right that it seems to be available in hardcover and kindle and audio formats. However it was just released in Jun, so I don't know about worldwide availability, other than North America and England. Personally, with three formats, I don't have a problem adding it to the poll, but I, myself, tend to like the books to be out for a few months. As a matter of interest, I don't read books in audio or kindle formats, but that's just me, I know I'm in the minority these days.

well, then, I'll be amenable to you pulling my nomination on the basis that it may not be available worldwide.

I'll read my copy alone, I guess!

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments It's not that it's in hardback Nancy, it's the fact it was published today, literally, so not really widely available.

That's been the view when this has happened before with nominations. As Bill said, maybe best to leave it a few months (like what happened with The Cuckoos Calling).

Thank you. I've already noted that I'm okay with it being pulled from the nomination because it may not have been published all over the planet yet.

M.L. | 365 comments I don't mind a new book at all, but I'm confused about the rules. Stephen King's The Shining was read earlier in 2014 so as I understand the rule #4 he is not eligible until 2015. Or is it just a suggestion to wait a year? Please clarify - thanks!

No, you're right. I didn't check the list since I normally associate Stephen King with horror. Sigh. Mr. Mercedes will have to wait until at least Feb. 2015 for a group read.

Thanks for clarifying! I was hoping I was wrong as there is a book coming out end of June that will have to wait to 2015, darn!

Carol Raynor | 6 comments I would like to nominate A Silent Tide by William E. Johnson. Available in hardback, paperback, and Kindle. It just won FIRST place at The National Indie Excellence Book Awards in the Thrillers category. Kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the end.

Jannene | 775 comments I would like to nominate Birdman by Mo Hayder.

In his first case as lead investigator with London’s crack murder squad, Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is called on to investigate the murder of a young woman whose body has been discovered near the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, south-east London. Brutalized, mutilated beyond recognition, the victim is soon joined by four others discovered in the same area—all female and all ritualistically murdered. And when the post-mortem examination reveals a gruesome signature connecting the victims, Caffery realizes exactly what he’s dealing with—a dangerous serial killer.
