Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I read this in either the late 70's or early 80's. The plot concerns a woman named Anne whose husband is killed in a mugging. She takes their children and moves (somewhere). It maybe an island. I know there is ocean all around.

There she meets a mysterious man when she goes to buy scuba equipment and she falls in love with him. I am pretty sure his name is Cam or Kam. (That was the first time I ever heard that name but am unsure about spelling.) It seems Cam/Kam has a secret. He's a shark..or killer whale. This was a really good book. Can anyone help me find it?

Deanne Devine | 227 comments Not sure if this helps, but there is a Hawaiian legend about Kamohoalii, a shark-god who could take human form. Might give you a place to start...

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Thank you. I'll check that out.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments It sounds like your book was published well ahead of all the current paranormal shifter romances, but have you tried this (or any of the other shapeshifter) lists? (There's lots of them, mostly recent publications though)

message 6: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments There are also shark-book lists on this site: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/sharks
I am thinking it was a shark because I think I read it too, and the reason I read it was because I was thinking it would be Jaws-y.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Thanks. The thing is I believe I looked at those lists and did not find it. I didn't even know there was a genre for this. In the book I read Anne was the main focus. But slowly secrets are revealed about Kam/Cam. (Not sure of the correct spelling.) I think the title may have had the word "Island" in it or "fear". I was just a kid when I read it but it was a fantastic thriller. Thanks for helping me try to find it.

message 8: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments I was pretty young, too, and if it is the same book, (view spoiler)

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Yes I remember that. Glad someone else has read it. Now if we could only figure out what the name of it is.

She had kids as I recall. And the husband who died was named Bob I think. But I can't remember the book cover, title or author.

Deanne Devine | 227 comments Looks like you aren't the only one looking for this book:

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Oh wow. This should not be that hard a book to find but I've spent alot of time on it and so far can't come up with an author or a title. Thanks for posting this and maybe I'll email her or check back occasionally.

Deanne Devine | 227 comments One poster thought the title was Fear Not the Deep, but can't find it anywhere. I found the posts on Abe's and it is definitely the book I remember. I will list some of the 'clues' in case it stirs up a memory for someone on this board:
Woman (widow), daughter and son from Ann Arbor are vacationing in Maui;
Kam, the shark-shifter is a scuba instructor;
Daughter is into photography and her photos of Kam are kind of off;
Mom is into needlepoint and the piece she is working on changes as she gets more involved with Kam.

Deanne Devine | 227 comments Oh, and the beach where the family is staying has black sand.
Son doesn't like Kam.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I remember Bob is killed at a shopping mall. He gets mugged. And Kam had another girlfriend on the island who vanished. (I think). It's been a long time.

The thing is I looked on Google, Amazon and here. I don't know where else to look. Barnes and Nobles has Chat reps so maybe they could help. Also maybe I find a list of all thrillers taking place in Hawaii that came out in the early 80;s. Thanks Deanne for posting this.

Deanne Devine | 227 comments Something else you can try: if you have any inkling about the title, the Library of Congress website has an online search for material copyrighted after 1978. You can narrow the search to a range, select text materials and any words you think are in the title to see if anything rings a bell. I skimmed it, but I have no idea what the title could be, so I didn't get anywhere. Then, there is the possibility that the book was copyrighted before 78. I registered mine long before it was published.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Hey Deanne. Thanks for the help. But I have no idea what the title is. I think it may have the word "island" in it or the word "fear". But I could be totally wrong on that. I think I'd recognize it if I heard it. I do not remember the cover or if there's a shark on it.

I thought of looking for people or groups who love books on sharks. I've looked at the groups on Goodreads and couldn't find it. I'm actually surprised this one is that hard to find. I'm pretty sure it was a Best Seller or sold well anyway. I was sharing books with someone and they gave it to me along with a bunch of mysteries, most of which were well known or at least findable. Will keep trying but starting to think it may just be to hard to find.

message 17: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments I'll let you know if I come across anything. This has been bugging me because, like you, I didn't think it would be hard to find at all. I just wanted to solve one of these "unsolved" threads!

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I tried Google. Google Books, Abe Books and Amazon. I'd like to try to find either people who specifically read Shark Fiction or people who are experts on books that came out in the late 70's or early 80's. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Deanne, you said you read it as well. For some reason I am thinking the title had the words "fear" and "island" in them. Do either of those sound at all familiar?

Are you still in contact with the person who originally gave you the book? If so, maybe try asking them if they remember it.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Thank you Myst. I asked them and they have no idea. This is a tough one. It's funny that I can remember the whole plot, all the characters names but no title or author.

message 22: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments I can't remember the title at all, but it would have had to sound scary for me to have read it, or had something shark-y in the title. I think I read it because I had recently read Jaws. But scary shark-y, not romanc-y, like When a Shark Loves a Woman. Bleh.
One person on another forum suggested the title might have been Fear Not the Deep, but I can't find any book with that title.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I don't think it is Fear not the deep. I think there is a book by that title but not the one we are looking for. I'd like to find a Goodreads group or a person who is very familiar with 70's and 80's thrillers. That maybe the way to go. I looked at the Shark shifter lists on here but it wasn't listed.

message 24: by Deanne (last edited Jan 28, 2017 12:49PM) (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments This is listed as being published in '91 on Goodreads, but on Amazon, the publication date is '82:
Island of Fear Island of Fear by Freda Bream
Can't find anything about it though. The author's bio suggests she wrote a variety of genres.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I couldn't find much but it is listed as being a detective novel which doesn't sound right. But man that title is familiar. Thanks Deanne. Will keep looking.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I want to bump this up as still have not found it.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Additional info that may help with this one:

Ann and Kam meet at a Scuba and Snorkeling Store where he works.

The story starts in the state of Michigan where Ann is orginally from.

Ann's husband is killed because he is mugged outside a shopping mall in Michigan.

She goes to Hawaii a widow with her kids.

Kids do not like Kam.

Kam had another girlfriend at one time who vanished.

Despite Kam and Ann becoming a couple, Kam will not get intimate with her and Ann does not understand why.

Maybe this will help a little.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Have not found this one yet and doubt I will..is there a way to search on Google for a book and what would you search under? Shark to men books, sea monsters, eighties romantic suspense? Any ideas?

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) I have been searching for this book too! I searched "shark-god, Hawaii, book, 70's" but only come up with a few discussions that are asking if anyone's read the book. I had the book on my shelf for years--at least thru high school--and I'd like to reread it.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Hi Kelley. Do you remember anything about the title? It's driving me crazy..this was a favorite of mine as a kid but I am drawing a total blank as to title..I thought maybe something with island in it. I've searched "Island of fear", "summer of fear", "fear island" and many other variants but no luck. Have no idea where to look next and there are others looking for it as well.

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) Hi, Bren. I cannot remember the title at all. I just remember re-reading it a time or two as a young adult. I'm going to run to the library on Monday. The local librarian helped me find another book years ago by using keywords to search. I couldn't remember the title but I remembered aspects of the story. Maybe she'll hit another home run for me--and us!

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Oh wow I hope so..thank you. I searched groups on this website too and couldn't find it. It's funny that we can remember the exact plot, everybodys' name but not the title. I searched Amazon as well as Google books. No luck. The library is a good idea..I hope we can find it.

message 33: by Deanne (new)

Deanne Devine | 227 comments Oh please, someone, find this! I really wanted to be the one to turn it up, but now I just want it to be found!:) I have even searched the Library of Congress. I do think I remember the cover - like part ocean/part island.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I think your right. I have no idea why this particular book is so difficult to find. Apparently many people remember it.

Might be worth asking the two people who've rated it here on GR too, both of them have been active within a month so there's a decent chance at least one of them might respond. Assuming nobody's already done that of course.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments I may have ruled that book out..honestly I don't know..I've done so many searches for this book and found so many that turned out not to be right..I can't keep them straight anymore. I'll look it up on Google books or try to as well.

I just did some quick googling and it looks like Island of Fear is another dead end. there's a lengthy description of it here
https://www.detecs.org/jarrett.html
But apparently it's the first in a series of mysteries with a Reverend as the sleuth and main character. Definitely doesn't sound like a match.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments No it doesn't. I do think I saw that book at one point. I wish I could remember a phrase from the book to type into google. I tried googling the characters names + Hawaii and that did not work. I also looked at mysteries that came out during that time period and couldn't find it that way either. I can't even remember the name of the writer.

If you think of any other ideas let me know. Thanks for looking.

Hey Kelley. Any luck at the library? I want to find this book so much.

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) No, I'm sorry. I stopped there, and the librarian tried to help me, but she couldn't find anything. It wasn't the librarian who helped me the other time, though. She has a shift tomorrow. I'll go back and see what I can find out with her.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments It's been found! Yay!!!

Cry for the Demon by Julia Grice. I do not know how to link to it. I was not the one who found it. But am glad it is found.

Kelley I wanted to make sure you saw that it's been found! Cry for the Demon by Julia Grice. And it is here on Goodreads. Finally! Can't wait to reread.

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) THAT'S IT!!!!! As soon as I saw the title in my notifications, I was like, YES!!! Who found it, Bren?

Kelley Stoneking (kstoneking) Not available thru either one of my local libraries, but it is on Amazon!

that other person who was looking for it posted on reddit and Someone answered with the title. Wow! And as soon as I saw the title I knew it was the book too..incidentially I was totally wrong about the title having Summer or Fear in it.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Kelley wrote: "Not available thru either one of my local libraries, but it is on Amazon!

And there is one review on it on Goodreads and a few ratings.

Kym | 1056 comments Glad you all found your book. I hunted for this book too and could of found it on FictionDB with the keywords - Maui, ticking the romance box. Once sorted by date, it was the first book listed.

Some twit had the genre marked as Historical Fiction, so I ignored it.

Your memory of names and the plot was great Bren.

Bren fall in love with the sea. | 325 comments Thanks. I was mostly looking under mystery and suspense and googling "Hawaii" and also using character names as keywords. Not just Google books but on a few different sites. Part of my problem was I couldn't remember if it was the seventies or eighties. I rated it 5 stars on here..I figure any book that has so many people searching so hard for it was a pretty incredible read.
