One of the best in the seriesI know Jemisin from her Broken Earth trilogy and I will definitely read her Dreamblood duology. It is sooo interesting! And it is hard nowadays to find a main character who is likable, kind and also very capable so this is kind of refreshing.
Short story predecessor (both in publication & storyline) to Jemisin's The Killing Moon. A Gatherer who collects the dreamblood of the dying is sent to aid a village beset by bandits who have a magician capable of casting powerful sleep spells. He falls in love with the messenger, and must choose between love and his vows as a Gatherer.
Nice enough story with some decent world building and a generally likable protagonist.

Oh cool, did not know this is a prequel. I love stories with guilds and stuff, so it was fun finding out there are two in this story (including a male sister! so a gender neutral guild, even better)
Probably my favourite story in the whole collection. I really loved the world building and the characters - it's actually nice to find a hero who doesn't solve all their problems by waving a sword/wand about! Love the unusual magic system, with dreamblood/dreambile, etc. I actually have The Killing Moon on my TBR shelf - I think I'll move it up to my next novel!
I was unfamiliar with this series, but all the relevant concepts of their religion are explained well enough within the story. I'll echo everyone else and say this story was a very good and has made me think about picking the The Killing Moon.
I will nominate The Killing Moon for the next contemporary novel vote.
