Michael Britt | 59 comments I got plenty of oil for my lantern so I'm all set for a powerless reading weekend :) so no worries!

So far Gavin has me reeled in, but Kip is a bit hard to get interested in. To be fair, I'm not all that far. So I'm open to the idea that his character gets a bit more interesting.

I've now moved onto Discount Armageddon. Another urban fantasy book, that's been on my TBR since 2013! Hoping it will be good as I've enjoyed McGuire's October Daye series.

I'll be interested to see how this goes for you. The first two books were just good enough for me not to abandon the series but yet I've been unable to bring myself to continue.

That's how it was for me as well. I only picked up the 3rd one now because of the challenge and I didn't have the paperback I am reading with me when I finished my other ebook. It was kind of like, "Well, I guess I'll read this now" rather than anticipating what will happen next.

I definitely struggle with Jim Butcher.. DNF the Aeronauts Windlass, and I have Dresden Files on sudden death elimination on the next book. I know I'm getting close to black listing him because I'm getting annoyed with little things that shouldn't annoy me at all

I really liked AW but quit Dresdan. I think the narrator for AW was awesome.

I'm so glad you said this! I thought the first two Codex books were okay, but nothing special. And I read the first Dresden and was indifferent to it; everyone else was raving about it and I couldn't work out what I wasn't getting!

Stefania (shayleene) | 5 comments At the moment I'm reading "Il sangue di Marklant", an Italian fantasy book written by one of my favourite authors *---* It's a shame that it hasn't been translated yet, 'cause so far I've been enjoying it a lot :D

The main character is a girl with the ability to see and talk with dead spirits, and who lives in a besieged town.

Went swimming with the kids today so I'm probably gonna make a bigger dent in The Black Lung Captain tonight as I'm in a near coma... have been really liking the Expanse series on audio as well

I hope you enjoy Kimberly. It's a good series.

Thanks Tammie! I really enjoy historical mysteries so it should be a good read. I've only read a couple of chapters so far.

Nimrod Daniel (nimroddaniel) | 171 comments I'm currently reading Theft of Swords. The Crown Conspiracy was great, Avempartha seems slower, it takes more than 100 pages until things starts moving.

I just attempted that new Carve the Mark book.. I just couldn't pay attention to it, I think I'm just not cut out for YA books anymore... oh and I just looked and apparently it's getting a lot of flak for racist stuff and discrimination against chronic pain? Huh. I do suffer from the pain thing but I can't even imagine what that would entail

....I'm currently reading these simultaneously, i never like to drop books and it's especially hard because some of these are turning out to be my all time favorites. My goal is to bring my currently reading list to single digits but people on here give such great recommendations that i think it will be unlikely.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments how in the world can you read that many books simultaneously Don?! Don't you ever get them mixed up?

Yeah I can do 3-4 books max lol

Don H.M (theayatollahofrock) | 23 comments Laura wrote: "how in the world can you read that many books simultaneously Don?! Don't you ever get them mixed up?"

The trick to reading this many books at once is to read huge chunks at once for some books while also reading small chunks of other books. For example, i have read 3/4th's of wise man's fear, and that's when i started The Knight of swords which i have nearly finished, as i am reading these huge chucks, i am also slowly making my way through the disaster artist which is a completely different type of book.

It's basically like following several television shows, some shows like Band of Brothers you marathon through while others like Deadwood you take in moderate doses and really watch closely to find subtle double or triple meanings in the dialogue.

I'm extremely compulsive when it comes to starting new books, and i never ever leave a book unfinished. I'll start any book if they are recommended to me, the cover art looks nice and the author isn't a bored suburban housewife writing twilight fan fiction.

The only advice i give to you is for the love of god don't do what i do, i don't mix them up....sometimes i forget that i've started a book and don't remember for months, in the case of stephen king's dark tower series years.

message 73: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments thanks for the advice Don. As it is I don't think I would ever consider mixing up that many books in one shot. Talk about bookworms!!! I've been called that but I think you are the typical of the charts kind! Hats off! I share your compulsion of finishing what I start novel or series alike. I like to pay attention when I read and most of the stories stay with me for a little while in the back of my head that is before I shelve them and go on to something else. I didn't read Outlander yet, planning to this year but if you want recommendations in romance try Grace Draven Eidolon series or Black Jewels by Anne Bishop if you haven't read them already. They are among my favourites because they make you chuckle and feel sorry and angry at the same time. I want to try Bujold the Curse of Chalion this month also. Heard it is really nice.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Just as an afterthought Don. Never judge a book by it's cover that's what my mother told me when I was little. And I found out it was true. I'm every way of life. Sometimes the cover art will be great but the content will not come up to the mark :)) And most of the female writers are housewives too! As a woman you get to be that as a rule! I think it would be better if you were to criticize the type of fiction and novel these women write and not categorize the authors. Sometimes a bored suburban housewife will decide to write whatever was on her mind for ages and will surprise you :))
