My mother is trying to remember the name of a book she read quite a few years ago. It was set in the future as an ice-age is coming to an end. The story involves a brother and sister making their way back north. There was a sequel to this book. The author was a well-known, older woman.

I found it! The author was Doris Lessing and the book is "Mara and Dann" and the sequel is "The Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog."
