Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "Outside." Roblin said, opening the door and pecking down the stairs. "Once your past the gate, light can reach the crystal." He ducked back into the room, plopping Arnold under his bed. "It would be best if Auntie didn't see you."

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "No, it's nothing like that! It's just..." Roblin protested, fidgeting. "I'd rather not go through the 'girl' talk, you know?" he finished, only partly lying.

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "Tell." Madeline whisper-commanded. She stared at Roblin, wishing she was a mesmer. She wondered why his aunt would be mad at him for having girls in his room.

message 58: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "It's not you personally, okay? Just-" he shook his head, eyes wide. He opened his mouth then closed it, staring at his feet.

message 60: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "It's about my parents, okay? Back off." He grabbed her bag and walked into the hallway. "I thought you had somewhere to be." Arnold was peeking out from under the bed, head bobbing from Madeline to Roblin like he watching a tennis match.

message 61: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "No. Nothing much." Madeline said, walking closer. She could always torture another innocent student another time. She wanted to know what Roblin was hiding.

message 62: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "I-I'll tell you some other time. At Foxfire." Roblin lied, not looking at her. "Can we go now?" he pleaded.

message 67: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "Nothing much. Just-nothing." Madeline said suspiciously. She cocked her head. "Why?"

message 68: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "Julli and Conner Cinder died of an ogre attack eleven years ago. That's as much as the council told everyone when it happened." Roblin's hair covered his bowed head.

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "What else?" Madeline said. "There's nothing you can't tell me." She said, tilting her head and forming a small smile.

message 70: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin lifted his head, eyes wet. "But it wasn't an accident! An ogre..." He sucked in a breath. "This was a bad idea. Why did I..." He shook his head and crossed into the hallway. "Idiot..."

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin tried to yank his arm away. "Come off it!" He yelped, voice cracking. "Madeline..." he looked at her as though he had never seen her before. "Sorry." He looked down and slipped something out of his pant leg pocket.

message 75: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "For what?" Madeline asked suspiciously, taking a step back.

message 76: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin wouldn't look at her as he rolled a small bottle around in his palm. "Maybe... maybe we can meet again some time. And it won't have to be like this. We could start again. I really am sorry." He pressed, eyes like a wounded dog's.

message 77: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments Madeline sighed. "Sure. Maybe somewhere around Foxfire, next time?" She suggested, desperate to know what Roblin was talking about.

message 78: by Zoë (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments Madeline shook her head quietly, and looked away.

message 80: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments The bottle broke, and a thick white smoke bellowed out, surrounding Madeline, tearing her apart particle by particle...

When Roblin opened his eyes, the staircase was empty. He hurriedly glanced out the window, where she was reforming outside the gate, having been forced to light leap.

message 84: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments ((lol))

"No!" Roblin grabbed his own hair and pulled, voice cracking. "I knew I shouldn't have used that, never tested properly..." He groaned, still oblivious.

message 85: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments Madeline smiled darkly. She clawed both her hands on Roblin's shoulder, turning visible again. "Gotcha."

message 86: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin yelped and spun around, facing her. He recognised her and let out a shuddering breath. "I thought- I thought you had faded!" He hugged her tightly, as though checking she wasn't a ghost. He pulled away quickly, blushing.

bubblewaffles | 780 comments Madeline smiled. "Nice to know you cared."

message 88: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "Well, just a little..." Roblin mumbled, looking at his feet. Then he realised his problem. Madeline was still in the house. He was still trapped.

message 89: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "Why won't you tell me!" Madeline pouted. "I can't wait longer."

message 90: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "L-listen..." Roblin stammered, backing up again. "I've told you everything!" He lied, slipping through the door onto the path.

message 91: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments Madeline followed him out slowly. She shook her head. She knew that Roblin was lying.

message 92: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "Okay. You're right." Roblin sighed, taking a few more steps back. "I might have only told you what you could've found out from anyone really." He smiled weakly, mind whirling for an escape.

message 93: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "I knew it!" Madeline said quietly, gripping Roblin on the arm. "Tell me!" She shouted in French.

message 94: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments "Um... you're doing it again. Are you sure you don't want an elixer for that?" He asked, sincerely worried. The hand on the arm was a bit uncomfortable though... Roblin tried to yank his arm away, only nearly losing his balance and dragging them back a few more steps.

message 95: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "Sorry." Madeline said, rubbing her forehead with her other hand.

message 96: by Zoë (new)

message 98: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin grabbed her robe. "I can't keep it a secret. You were right, it isn't fair." He pulled away and held his fist to his sides, walking through the gate.

message 99: by bubblewaffles (new)

bubblewaffles | 780 comments "Please!" Madeline begged. She strided after him.

message 100: by Zoë (new)

Zoë Potter Fowl Jackson (potterfowljackson) | 669 comments Roblin looked back at her and grabbed her hand, eyes wet. "I'm sorry." He whispered, barely audible. Something hard pressed into her hand as he lifted his fist, and the sun shone through her home crystal he had nabbed when he grabbed her cloak. The beam of light washed over Madeline as Roblin stepped to the side, out of the light.
