The 1997 would probably be because the editor is listed as primary author. And that explains the change from 28 to 26 also.
Sorry, I don't follow. Searching for a name should give the same result regardless of being editor, primary author or contributing author, should it not? Anyway, when using author's last name and part of the book title returns a hit, then adding author's first name shouldn't result in losing the book?
The Goodreads search is notorious. There are many threads on it and it is not something that librarians have any influence over. We deal with specific records not the functionality of the site.I suggest you post in the Feedback Group.

If I search with her full name "Marcy Sheiner", 26 books are listed.
Below is one of the two books that disappear.

I can see nothing wrong with it. However, searching for "Sheiner 1997" returns this book only, while searcing for "Marcy Sheiner 1997" returns nothing. Peculiar!
