Mat Blackwell | 5 comments Hello! Just letting people that I've co-created and co-written a black comedy series called 'Bruce', starring Angus Sampson, Rich Davies and Dave Lawson. For fans of the Monty Python movies, or Wilfred - Tony Rogers, the director and one of the co-creators of the series, is actually one of the co-creators of Wilfred, so it has a similar dark deadpan aesthetic. The idea is, it's a black sharehouse comedy, but set in 1788 in the convict penal colony that became Australia. It's kind of like a Blackadder meets Deadwood, but very Aussie. It's been almost a decade of blood, sweat, tears, and redrafts, BUT IT'S FINALLY AN ACTUAL THING!
I am seriously just so incredibly stoked.

The whole thing is binge-watchable for free here:

Enjoy!

Interesting. Both are great, but so different from one another.

Mat Blackwell | 5 comments Yes! But also not, in a way: a lot of the humour in the Monty Python movies was to take a completely ludicrous idea, and then play it relatively straight (ie, no real "jokes"), letting the comedy come from the clash of ludicrous and realistic. I'd argue that the comedy in Wilfred comes from the same place. (I haven't seen the American remake of Wilfred, by the way, so that might be completely different!) Also, both have a real darkness about them, especially the later Python movies...

Here are the laurels so far...

Super exciting!

Did any of you watch it yet? Keen to know what other writers thought about the writing... because directors and actors always get all the attention! ;) When we all know that it's the writers who create the characters and make the story...
