SOLVED. Adult SciFi. Space marine finds egg asks to go back to the girl he loved when he was 16. [s]

This is a book i'm desperately on the hunt for that would have been read maybe 15-20 years ago. I have no idea of the title/author and would love the name of the title and find a copy!

It starts with a 16 year old (ish) boy who is a bit of a loner but comes from a wealthy family. On holiday, his dad hires a companion for him, a girl, who he meets by the pool and they have a summer romance. Then she is invited over to stay, and at some point he finds out about her (being hired) but she wants to be with him. He leaves and joins the space army/navy/cadets/soldiers/force/marine and goes on all of these missions. He is there for a long while. Years later when on a mission they find some sort of egg, except it can grant you things, and he asks to go back to her.

I'm sorry I can't provide too much info other than that! Any help would be so greatly appreciated!
