I've seen parts of Pearl Harbor and it's an absolute abomination :P

She said that he said the only part he liked was the fact they talked about a small island that was also attacked prior nobody ever talks about, and some of the actual action scenes were nice, but otherwise he hated how it was mainly a stupid love story, he thought it was going to be a brutal and dramatic war film because that's how it was advertised

But then there's some characters whose diversity is important to them but that's not their only trait, like Magnus and Alex. They're both LGBT and that's a crucial part of who they are but it's not their gimmick.
In something like Star Trek, which is our universe in the future, I feel they could bring up the issues of racism and prejudice against minorities in the past while still keeping the characters fleshed out. I mean, maybe they do. I haven't seen it. But for a lot of real world people, being a minority is an important part of who they are and they face a lot of struggles over it so completely ignoring that in fiction seems dangerous
Not every single story needs to address it but it shouldn't go ignored either. If you're writing about Vikings in Norway in 850 then there's probably not going to be black people. But if you write about a Viking in Morraco in 1150, it'll look mighty suspicious if everyone is white
