It did and I've read 57, though many of them I only read because I was forced to do it at university. My stomach still curdles at the thought of Madame Bovary. Or My Damned Ovaries as my friend and I used to call it.

Feeling tony - I've only read 2. Seriously, I was appalled to see Franzen on there. I liked The Corrections and intend to read Freedom.

I've read 73. Finally it pays to be a senior citizen who majored in English back in the day. One of the books I would move to the previous list.

I was surprised to see Frazen as well. I'm not embarrassed about reading Grisham, Clancy or Sydney Sheldon. i enjoyed them all immensely when I read them.

I've only read 4, and not all of those 4 were bad books, necessarily. Most of those 4 were read when I was a teenager, so I don't find that nearly as embarrassing! It's possible I read one or more of those scifi novels, but I don't remember. While I don't think I'd ever read them again, when I was a kid I really liked Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Chariots of the Gods. I was a kid, what do you expect? But a lot of adults liked Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I think it worked for its time, but I doubt it is solid literature that will span the ages.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments Stay with Me looks interesting to me. I added it to my TBR but have a backlog of African novels on my TBR so am not sure if I'll ever work it in.

Dying: A Memoir also looks interesting to me. I recently added 2 other books about dying to my TBR so will need to sit down and review them to see which of the three I most want to read.

Thanks. A number of interesting ones there. Solar Bones sounds interesting as does Marita: The Spy Who Loved Castro, A Year in the Wilderness: Bearing Witness in the Boundary Waters, and Mean. I've been seeing See What I Have Done, but it would need rave reviews for me to move it up.

I haven't decided yet. I wasn't keen on the Zavin book I did read, and have read a lot of Follett, so am not sure if I'm up to another one of his. I don't know about any of the others yet.

It was poetic but a bit too sparse to really hold my interest.

I wasn't aware of the term cli-fi. It sounds like the books would be somewhat erotic. (I titter.)

I went back to the books on the Vietnam war and it had a list of Times reader suggestion. Matterhorn and The Sympathizer were added among others.

Funny! Which 3 from the list have you read? I have ‘The History of Bees but haven't gotten to it yet. I read another one last year (YA)-a Finnish novel about a world with no water Memory of Water which was good (for YA). And of course being an Atwood fan, I've read her Orxy and Crake trilogy which I loved but Karin didn't care for.

I've read The Water Knife, Gold Fame Citrus, and Borne. Flight Behavior is owned and on the TBR. The Water Knife is the only one I would recommend as the other 2 were more "OK" than "I enjoyed."

The Water Knife comes with a caveat. It had a male-fantasy type sex scene that really irritated me, but I really enjoyed the book other than that. It was fast paced and had, I thought, an intriguing spin on water rights.

Are you planning to work in The History of Bees?

Story (storyheart) Are you planning to work in The History of Bees?
Eventually.

I was disappointed by VanderMeer's other book Annihilation so probably won't bother with Borne. I'll take a look at TWK though. Thanks!

Going down the list I was just deciding none of them were going to be my cup of tea when I stumbled across Manhattan Beach - I'm number 9 on 10 copies on the hold list. Scanning further, I found The Child Finder - #24 on 5 so it's going to be a Christmas read, I believe. Denfeld's The Enchanted was an excellent book.

Ahhh! This wonderful time of the year. I've read two (History of Wolves 4 stars and Lincoln in the Bardo which is shaping up to a strong 4 stars at the halfway point.

I've got 4 on my TBR - Ill Will, Exit West, The Book of Joan, and Sing, Unburied, Sing.

I managed to mangle my last post. Bardo was a charitable 3 stars while Manhattan Beach is a 4 star read at the halfway point.

I'm assuming Autumn is on the TBR as I checked out the ebook yesterday. I feel like I should at least give Essex Serpent a try as memory says Leslie raved about it as well as you, Story.

I wonder why some books just THRILL and others are just a good story. This was one of the former for me.
