I felt like Clementine was so selfish, and I found it hard to believe she would have kept up her "friendship" with Erika if she truly felt forced to be friends with her in the first place. I suppose the final pages of the book help us realize that both Erika and Clementine did value their friendship despite the awkwardness and forced feeling it took on sometimes. I didn't find myself rooting for their friendship at all, though I am happy with the way they seem to have left things. I think they'll always have a friendship, but maybe now it won't seem so forced.
I was not rooting for Clementine and Erika's relationship- I found myself feeling like Erika was a lovely friend who valued the friendship and was providing the most to it. Clementine was caught up amongst her angst with Erika 'invading' her childhood and couldn't let that go. I wanted to see Erika happy without needing Clementine or the past being shoved in her face.Their relationship throughout the book often reminded me of some friendships I have witnessed over the years in the way sometimes one side of the two friends is trying harder to make it mutually beneficial where as the other party is more self centred. At times it felt like they had a disjointed sibling relationship with Clementine being the 'older' sibling. I too wondered why Clementine truly kept Erika around when she clearly didn't seem happy with how it all started and their ongoing friendship.
I found it such a weird friendship and that obligation...but it was kind of addictive at the same time....all the secrets and dysfunction...while I was more on Erikas side her twist of stealing items really threw the relationship balance for me...
I totally agree Meagan about being thrown after the 'Treasure box' made me think she was a player in the way their friendship was.
