Oh, major OUCH! So glad your injuries weren't more serious, but I'm sure you've got some soreness in addition to those abrasions and black eye. And make sure those new glasses are really stylin'!

Thank you for your thoughts. I look worse than I feel. Merry Christmas to all. I am reading Mr. Darcy's Christmas Carol...we had our family celebration yesterday and the weather is so bad we are not going out.

Teresa | 313 comments The tonsillitis was getting better but I can feel it again tonight. I have another lot of antibiotics so if it's still bad tomorrow I'll be starting back on them.

message 467: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 414 comments Sheila -- I must tell you my "black eye" story.

Some time ago, my sister needed a shot of Novocain at the dental college. The student hygienist hit a vein in her cheek. Her face swelled and reddened immediately. By the time she reached home, her eye was black and the side of her face was swollen and bruised.

They had plans to eat out with friends and go to a movie. Since it wasn't too painful, they didn't cancel. All night long, everywhere they went people looked at her and glared at her husband.

At the end of the evening, her husband told her he wouldn't go anywhere with her again until her face was healed.

I was thinking that someone might believe the same about me with so much in the news now about abuse. But my spouse has never done anything close...I would leave him...for sure. Sad that our minds jump there.

Growing up I had any number of sore throats and even one bout with strep throat. We didn't have central heat until I was in the 4th grade and when I would wash my hair and set it in curlers I would get a sore throat...wet head, no heat! So I can feel for you.

Teresa | 313 comments I remember that feeling well Sheila. Never had any heating growing up. We lived in a small cottage and I remember getting up on winter's mornings and there would be frost inside on the window glass!! I've suffered from tonsillitis since I was a child but back in the seventies they wouldn't take them out unless you were actually choking. It's too late now. The doctor wouldn't recommend it at my age. So I'm stuck with them! Some years are not too bad but I've had a particularly bad one this year. Have had about six or seven bouts so far.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments 284.) Mercy's Embrace: So Lively a Chase 4.5 rounded up to 5 stars

message 473: by wosedwew (new)

wosedwew | 414 comments Sheila and Teresa -- I can identify with both your comments.

Our house had central heat but my parents had grown up with unheated bedrooms and it was unthinkable to them to pay for heat for the upstairs "just because the kids slept up there!" We learned to dress very quickly!

Teresa -- my tonsils were removed when I was about 4 years old because my SISTER had a sore throat! My older brother and I were rounded up for the surgery at the same time because the doctor "didn't want to be bothered" having to take tonsils out one at a time. My baby brother was judged to be too young and had to develop his own sore throat years later.

Anji | 275 comments Ah Sheila, I'm just doing a bit of a catchup here and read about your fall. Hope the 'shiner' is starting to fade a bit now, or is it a bit early for that yet? Sending hugs and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Some kind (!) person gave me a heavy cold, which started on Christmas Eve afternoon. Was feeling a bit rough yesterday but at least managed to cook the Christmas dinner this year, unlike last when I was bedridden with flu. Felt like a wet dishcloth by evening though. And it's back to work tomorrow in advance of a second trip of the year to Hampshire. Don't think there'll be any visits to Austen-related places this time, as hubby will be with me and the friends we're staying with aren't Janeites either. Still, one can live in hope!

Happy New Year to you!

I think that was a common practice for doctors at the time but would be unheard of today. As a side note, my sister and I had hysterectomies the same week too -- but that's a story for a different day.

message 477: by Anji (new)

Anji | 275 comments In the 1990's, we had to plead with the ENT department at our local hospital to take our son's tonsils out. He'd been hospitalised twice with what turned out to be tonsillitis, as the symptoms came on so quickly that it could possibly have been meningitis. He was due to start school, and we didn't want him missing days, or a week or more, every time he had another bout. Thankfully, they agreed and we had no more problems after that.

message 479: by J. W. (new)

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments No kidding... Wose... I was about 5 or 6 when they took my tonsils and my mother thought I did so well that she would have her's out too. Lawd! There is a big difference between a kid and an adult having the surgery. She thought she was 'gonna die' or nearly. It knocked her off her feet. Bless her heart.

The 70's was really big on hysterectomies. All you had to do was nod at your doctor and off you went to surgery. Times have changed.

Sorry to hear you are sick. I had family Christmas Eve and my son called ahead of time to inform me that his daughter, Mae, had a bad head cold and should they stay home due to my immune system being compromised and due to Pop-pop's age (96). A flu like virus has been making the rounds here. I, of course, could not say to keep Mae at home but avoided hugs and kisses. So...we'll see.

message 482: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 313 comments Thank goodness my daughter had them out when she was six. She was off school every second week with them. My doctor told me to fight to get them out at the consultancy. I went in all geared up for battle, he took one look in her mouth and said 'well they're definitely coming out' . I felt very deflated:-)

Hope you stay well Sheila.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 1166 comments Dang Sheila... that was not right having you make that call. We had a gathering and someone was sick and it was a given that they would avoid Dad [92]. I pray that you all remain healthy.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments 289.) Letters from the Heart - By mrsdarcy2032 “What if Mr. Darcy returned to Hertfordshire only to discover it was too late and Elizabeth had been forced to marry a vicious Mr. Collins? With Elizabeth all but stranded in Kent and Darcy determined never to love another, how will they find their way to happiness and each other? Follow the journey from heartbreak to happily ever after in the personal correspondence of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.” http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show... 5 stars - this one had me crying copiously at the end. There is a HEA.

This short story gives us both Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s POV. It, too, has a HEA. 4 stars

One Great Love by mrsdarcy2032 A modern story in which a romance writer looks back at the one who got away. “Writer Elizabeth talks about her one great love, can she get it back?” http://meryton.com/aha/index.php?show... 4 stars. (I'm on a roll with stories from the same author.)

wosedwew | 414 comments Glad to see you like this author too.
I've read the 1st two you list but not the modern.
On FFnet she posted the first one as "Letters from Elizabeth" and then "Letters from Darcy". A sad story with a HEA and a sympathetic Lady C.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 1301 comments 293.) I Shall Know How to Act by mrsdarcy2032 In a spoof of Lady Catherine’s visit to Elizabeth at Longbourn it is a topsy turvy use of canon’s long conversation about Darcy’s engagement. 3.5 stars
