The language is stunning, but this is a tough one. I have to constantly put it down to take a breath.

It's amazing to me that the author can write so beautifully about such horrific things. I find myself rereading passages just because of how stunning the prose is. I think most people are further along in the book, but I just read the section where Maureen is telling her life story to the ghost, and I am enjoying reading it slowly.


Lisa McInerney is a young Irish writer and The Glorious Heresies is her first novel, which won the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction last year. She was already known for a blog called "The Arse End of Ireland", which gives you some idea of what to expect.
The Glorious Heresies follows the tangled lives of a loosely linked set of characters in Ireland's second city, the port of Cork. It is not a book for those who are easily shocked!
