R14: Team #13 ~ Reading Queens

Shelf : Guilty Pleasures
Date Read : 2-2-17 through 2-7-17
Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh

Rating : 5 Stars
After reading the first Psy-Changeling book I was very excited to start this one. It did not disappoint!
The same thing happened in this book for me as the first one. The beginning of the story was a struggle because of the cold and unfeeling nature of the Psy character, but with a little perseverance I made it to the meat of the story. Again... it was SOOOO WORTH IT!! So much emotion!! ME GUSTA :P
Faith is a F-Psy which means that she has foresight. She is one of the best they have and she is worth billions of dollars. Her whole life she has been observed and pampered "for her own protection". She is told that if she goes into the outside world she will be overwhelmed and mentally fall apart. She starts to experience visions where she feels emotions and this is totally foreign to her. She thinks that she is going insane.
Vaughn is a Jaguar changeling who is part of Lucas' pack. He is very guarded and cynical due to trauma in his past. He meets Faith one night when she sneaks out of her compound and travels into pack territory. He treats her with extreme distrust, but then his cat recognizes something inside of her that he can't shake.
Faith meets Sascha and they start discussing her life, what she's been taught about herself, and her Psy designation. Sascha tries to explain to her what the Psy Council does and teaches their race isn't natural or healthy. She tells her that what she's experiencing might not be what she's been told her whole life. Faith has a much harder time letting go of The Silence than Sascha did. Due to her isolation at an early age, she is more susceptible to being overwhelmed with emotion and physical contact.
Faith and Vaughn's story is just as intriguing as Lucas and Sascha's. The push and pull of their attraction is just as enjoyable as it is frustrating. Her inability to handle touch and his strong desire for it are at odds. Just like the last book the intimate scenes are so steamy and sensual. Nalini Singh has a way of being erotic without being vulgar.
The book talks about the NetMind. I don't completely understand what that is. Sometimes when the author is describing what goes on in the Psy mind, it can be a little hard to grasp.
I absolutely love the acceptance, physical affection, and love between the pack members. They are the family we all wish we could have in a perfect world. They are totally supportive and accepting.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series! I enjoyed this one better than her Guild Hunter series.

Wild Cat, 4 stars, read 02/06/17
review:
Love the Shifters Unbound world that Jennifer Ashley has created. She has easily become one of my favorite paranormal authors. Ms. Ashley easily entwined so much action, steamy romance and storylines. Great story and writing. I love when I am so drawn into the story that I feel as if i'm right there with the characters. The main story follows Diego and Cassidy. Although Diego is human and Cassidy is a shifter, he proves that he is just as strong and loyal as any Alpha. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Cry Wolf, read 02/07 - 02/11
3.5 stars
Review:
Overall I enjoyed this story. There were parts of the story were I felt the flow was moving slowly and it made the story drag for me. Other than that I thought the story had good characters, action and romance. I was drawn in enough that I care what happens with Charles and Anna. I want to know what happens next.

Still need to narrow down my choices, will check in once I make a decision. Been busy at a work conference and haven't had a chance to sit and look at the shelf yet.

But I'm going to work on my reviews today for the books I've finished. The reviews will be extremely short, but done.

1/18: Hunters
Book: Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole
Dates Read: 1/26 - 2/11
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Review: Not my favorite from the Immortals After Dark Series. Lucia annoyed me with her constant lying and Garreth's domineering/alpha/macho werewolf spiel got old real quick. Lucia's no sex demand, while different from the IAD norm, was pushed to every possible limit and position without technically "violating" it, went on way to long and was overdone. Overall this story just didn't work for me.

Since it's early in the game, I'm going to try reading The Name of the Wind for this week's shelf.

Beautiful Oblivion by Jamie McGuire

Rating : 1.5 Stars
Sooooo... where to start... there are so many places, and none of them good.
Cami is a bartender at a bar called The Red Door. She has a boyfriend who is never around because he works so much. I did not like Cami or her actions. I found myself getting so frustrated with her immaturity and ridiculousness.
Trent is a tattoo artist who grew up in the same town as Cami. He shows interests in her one night when she goes out drinking with her roommate, and is very persistent.
There is certain dialogue and situations between characters that is so completely unbelievable. It was very cheesy and stupid. I couldn't feeeeel the story because I couldn't get past the fact that it didn't feel genuine. The story line isn't terrible, but it isn't great either (hence the 1.5 stars). Add in the bad dialogue and annoyingly dramatic scenes and it creates for a poor reading experience.
This book would have been a 2 or 2.5 except for a few things that really rubbed me the wrong way. The author talks about her and her roommate working a section of the bar so they could make a whole months worth of bills in one night, but they still lived like they were broke. It made no sense. She's broke to the extent that when her brother gets into financial trouble, she takes a second job..... which brings me to the thing that I hated most about this book.
Cami takes a receptionist job at the tattoo parlor Trent works at because they're looking for "someone hot, Trent. Someone with nice tits." She is soooo desperate for money that she takes this job working for a sexist asshole. Forget about applying for any other job or hell, even McDonald's, which would probably pay the same. Buuuuutttt NOPE! She's going to debase herself for the sake of the story. Then she goes on to talk about how her large breasts and small frame help her make great tips at the bar and helped her get a new job. She doesn't want to be objectified but OH WELL! She's going to use what God gave her! What in the actual f**k????
All of these negative thoughts came from the first 20% of the book. I read the whole thing because of BSB, and I didn't get the ending at all. I had to google what in the heck it meant, and apparently I'm not alone by a long shot. The ending made the story make no sense. So much of the drama and turmoil was completely pointless. I finally had to stop talking about things I disliked or my review would have been a 10,000 word essay.
This book sucked. Either this book is a fluke or her Beautiful Disaster series was a fluke. Either way, I will not be continuing on with the rest of the books in this spin off series.

1/25: Paranormal Romance
Demon From the Dark by Kresley Cole
Book: Demon From the Dark by Kresley Cole
Dates Read: 1/30 - 2/5
Rating: 5 stars
Review: So this one was a winner for me. Carrow and Malkom were great main characters and I especially enjoyed their time in "hell." The interplay on how each learned each other was well done. My other favorite part was Carrow's commitment to her niece, Ruby, and how she literally grew up and took responsibility overnight. Loved the action on the island and his relationship with Ruby. Priceless.

MacRieve by Kresley Cole
Book: MacRieve by Kresley Cole
Dates Read: 1/18 - 1/19
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: Boy, was this a really tough one to read. Sexually abused characters are always an "iffy" read for me. Uilleam MacRieve was abused as a child and that damage has haunted him for hundreds of years. When he meets Chloe Todd he finally gets some happiness to only have it snatched away. The struggle with MacRieve and Chloe is heart wrenching and was painful to read at times. I understood where MacRieve was coming from; but his hatred/love for Chloe was just brutal. I loved Chloe and her kickass Olympic soccer character. Overall, a great addition to the IAD series.

Cheri- sorry beautiful oblivion was so unenjoyable. Hope your next book is a winner!
Sherri - that's a series I have been meaning to try out at some point. Maybe sometime during this round of bingo :)

Book: Vampire Academy
Date finished: Feb 16
Rating: 4 stars
Sometimes there is something behind all the hype. So far, this series is promising even though I also found it ridiculously annoying at times.
I like YA books but not into the high school drama that happens. There is a lot of the mean girls mess to wade through but despite that I did really really like this book. To the point that I am likely to binge read the rest of the series in the next week. Sitting down to write this review, I don't even know how to articulate what it is that I like. It was just a book I couldn't put down until it was over.
Rose is someone I can see growing into a fantastically kick-butt heroine. She has lots of teenage immaturity and stupid impulsivity issues to sort through but is also loyal to her friends and has good intentions and I am ready to come along on her journey. And if Dimitri is part of that journey, yes please. I don't know if I like him for Rose but he seems like a swoon-worthy book boyfriend.
I haven't started a new vampire series in a long time so it was fun to get lost in a new world and read Mead's take on the sometimes sparkly creatures. Lissa and Rose have a unique bond, both in friendship and magic and I want to read more about them. Glad I finally gave this series a try :)

I love that series! There is a lot of drama and emotional turmoil, but it's so amazing! Literally the only series that has brought me to tears. Wait until the third book!!! So many emotions!

Have you read her other series? I read the Georgina Kincaid books a while back and absolutely adored them but tried a different series and the first book didn't really hook me. Wondering if I should go back and try again.

Book: Frostbite

I am having so much fun with this series. I love learning more about this world and especially Lissa's spirit abilities. The pacing was nice and action-packed and there was a lot less of the petty high school drama from the previous book. Rose's growth is noticeable and I liked the new characters that were introduced. The only thing I wasn't so happy about was Mason's (view spoiler) .
The momentum has died a little but will definitely get some more reading in for the 3 day weekend!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Still trying to decide on my book for the Mythology shelf, nothing is catching my attention. I might use this shelf for a re-read. Will let you know. Also should have my reviews for the favorites and vampires shelves done by the end of the weekend.

Finally decided on One Fell Sweep. Can't really go wrong with IA :)

Review:
I read this series out of order but have enjoyed them all.
This was the last book in the series for me.
Going in I already knew how much of a jerk Jimmy could be, reading this book I got more insight as to the why.
I loved how Jimmy and Lena became friends and through that friendship their feelings deepened and they fell in love. Even though they may have seemed like an odd couple, I believe that their characters complimented each other. Lena taught Jimmy that he was capable of receiving and giving love. Jimmy was protective of Lena and when he finally got himself together, treated her like queen.
I hate that the series is over because I want more of these characters.

Let me just start by saying, this was not my favorite BDB book. I didn't feel the chemistry between the MCs. The story focused so much on Phury fighting his inner demons and his drug problem that there wasn't a lot of emotional expansion between them. They were apart more often than not, and when they were together they were not on the same page. It was disappointing.
Cormia is one of the Chosen. She was picked to be First Mate for Phury. She is meek and mild, but has a strong inner strength and desire to experience something different from her life in the Fade.
Phury is Zshadist's twin brother who, throughout the first few books, you think has it all together. In the previous book you start to get a glimpse of where his head is really at and how bad his mental state is. His drug abuse is out of control.
Phury bothered me because his addiction was so strong. I had a hard time listening to his justifications and his excuses. So much of the story was him going into his room to get high by red smoke. Then it was over and over again how he was a failure and how he was the most terrible person in the world. It was exhausting. He felt like the biggest screw-up and he felt that everything wrong with the people in his life is his fault.
One thing I really hated was the "wizard". It was the little devil on his shoulder constantly telling him everything he's doing wrong, how he's letting everything down, and how he should just go do more drugs. Maybe addicts have that inner voice, but they don't have a personality that actually has a face and shape and talks to them. That falls into more like serious mental illness territory.
One thing I did enjoy was the parts about John, Qhuinn, and Blay. Their storyline is so riveting. I can't wait to find out what happens to those cuties.
In this story things are really heating up in the war with the lessers. Its getting to the point to where I am biting my nails to know what's going to happen. The evil just keeps amping up.
I will definitely continue reading the BDB books. I didn't like this certain book because I didn't care for the MCs. It had nothing to do with the pace of the story or the storyline. Every book there are new people that are introduced that are very intriguing and I keep hoping that the next story will be about them. There are some mind blowing things that happen and I can't wait to find out what comes next.

2/8: Favorite Series
Book: Echoes in Death by J.D. Robb
Dates Read: 2/8 - 2/15
Rating: 5 Stars
Review: The "In Death" series remains one of my favorite ones by far. Can you believe Echoes in Death is the 44th in the series (and I have read them all)? Amazing!!
Echoes in Death has Eve and Peabody on the trail of killer who is torturing couples in a macabre one. Devils, vampires and phantoms are just a few of his disguises and as Eve and Peabody dive deeper into this mystery they discover a twisted killer bent on creating his ideal woman.
I absolutely loved this book and Eve's evolution has been the key to keeping me engaged in this series. Can't wait until the next one!!

2/15: Vampires
Book: The Accidental Vampire by Lynsay Sands
Dates Read: 2/15 - 2/27
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review: The Accidental Vampire tells the story of Elvi Black and Victor Argeneau. Victor is a council enforcer sent to Port Henry to investigate a vampire who has placed an singles ad for her mate, supposedly Elvi. However, not all is as it seems, as Elvi's friends have set out to find her someone to spend the rest of eternity with since they are getting older. Of course Victor and Elvi end up being life-mates and everything that Victor thought was going to happen goes out the window.
At times, I have to admit that the folks of Port Henry are just ridiculous. Between Mabel's (Elvi's BFF) and Teddy's (the town sheriff's) interference; everything is a mess. The town's "guilt" embracement of Elvi as the town vampire and their rituals boarders on unbelievable; but I guess you don't read this type of book if you can't suspend believe for a bit.
I really wanted to learn more about Elvi's accidental turning and wanted to know who did the turning; but alas that was not answered. Overall, I enjoyed this one but nothing unique.

I want to like Phury, but I really don't. I hoped it would be better once into it, but see you didn't think it did. Bummer. I skipped over it and just kept reading into the series. LOL!
